Detroit, MI

The world of "Hyperbole" is both dark and hilarious. The debut novel by Metro Detroit-based author Ryan Parmenter tells the story of Harland, an aimless office worker and cynical pothead who becomes involved in a terrorist conspiracy after the destruction of Washington, DC.

Throughout the story, Harland overhears several songs with outlandish titles. As Parmenter was completing the novel, it occurred to him that he should record versions of those songs to create a "novel soundtrack."

"You hear about movie soundtracks all the time," Parmenter said. "I thought it would be funny to release my novel with its own soundtrack."

In addition to writing fiction, Parmenter is a composer, keyboardist, and singer. His former band Eyestrings released two albums and in 2005 performed at the first Rites of Spring Festival, an annual progressive rock festival in Pennsylvania.

Parmenter knows that "Hyperbole: Original Novel Soundtrack" is provocative, with song titles such as, "Sell That Kid By The Pound" and "Put It In Before I'm Sixteen." Parmenter admits: "The content is strange and disturbing, but that's my sense of humor." Both the novel "Hyperbole" and its soundtrack are intended for adults only.

Featuring 7 tracks and a running time just over 20 minutes, the soundtrack is concise and modestly priced. Each song has a drastically different style, ranging from gangsta rap to country ballad to teen pop. The music is catchy and may just have you humming along, though the lyrics are as dark and strange as the fictional United States that inspired them.

From "F- Yo Dead Mama" to "Everything That Got Me Here Is Stupid," the music allows fans of the book to take a unique souvenir from the universe of "Hyperbole."

The soundtrack is available for less than $7 at iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby.

The novel "Hyperbole" is available in paperback, audiobook, and eBook at Amazon.com.
