Abernathy was a close associate of MLK, a minister, and a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. Following MLK's assassination, Abernathy took over the SCLC Poor People's Campaign and led the 1968 March on Washington.

In SELMA, David Oyelowo stars as MLK. The feature focuses on King's efforts to gain equal voting rights for all, ending with the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., followed by President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Also in the cast are Tom Wilkinson as President Johnson, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, Andre Holland as Andrew Young, Omar J. Dorsey as James Orange, Alessandro Nivola as John Doar, Dylan Baker as J. Edgar Hoover, Giovanni Ribisi as Lee White, Tessa Thompson as Diane Nash, Stephen Root as Al Lingo, Jeremy Strong as James Reeb, Tim Roth as George Wallace and Oprah Winfrey as Annie Lee Cooper.
SELMA will make a limited premiere on Christmas Day 2014, with a wide release set for January 9, 2015.
Domingo's other upcoming big screen projects include Time Out of Mind, 400 Boys and Beautiful Something. He recently starred in Lee Daniels' The Butler, HairBrained, All Is Bright, 42, Culling Hens, Newlyweeds, Lincoln, Red Hook Summer and more. The actor last appeared on Broadway in 2010's The Scottsboro Boys, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. His other Broadway credits include Passing Strange, Well and Chicago.
