As has been long speculated, Barbra Streisand is still hard at work on making another GYPSY film, in which she would play 'Mama Rose,' and according to Time, she has her sites set on Lady Gaga to co-star. Joel Stein writes:  "She told me about her cousin Lowell, I told her what a mullet is, she told me she’s thinking of casting Lady Gaga as the lead in her remake of Gypsy, and I told her I was really, really cold."

Streisand is said to be co-producing the film with Joel Silver at Universal Pictures, and the script is currently being written by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes.

Lady Gaga released her debut album, "The Fame," in 2008, winning Grammys for Electronic/Dance Album and Dance Recording (for "Poker Face"), and earning five #1 hits. Her follow-up, "The Fame Monster," produced the smash singles "Bad Romance" and "Telephone," and recently received three Grammys, including Female Pop Vocal Performance (for "Bad Romance"), Pop Vocal Album and Short Form Music Video (for "Bad Romance"). "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster" have sold more than 15 million copies combined.

Gaga was named Forbes' Most Powerful Woman in the World 2011 and was included in Time's annual "The 2010 Time 100" list of the most influential people in the world. With over 2.2 billion combined views of all her videos online, Lady Gaga is one of the biggest living people on Facebook with over 53 million 'likes' and is #1 on Twitter with nearly 30 million followers. She has also recently launched her own social network just for fans, LittleMonsters.com. Lady Gaga is the only artist in the digital era to top the 5 million sales mark with her first two hits.

Streisand has appeared on Broadway in I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE and FUNNY GIRL. She has also received a special Tony Award. Her film work includes FUNNY GIRL, FUNNY LADY, YENTL, and NUTS. She has won numerous awards including the Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy awards.

GYPSY was last seen in a production that was first presented by Encores! from July 9 to 29, 2007 with Patti LuPone playing Rose, and direction by Arthur Laurents. Principal casting included Laura Benanti in the title role of "Gypsy/Louise", with Boyd Gaines as "Herbie", and Leigh Ann Larkin as "Dainty June."
