BAD GRANDPA Punks GRAVITY at Weekend Box Office with $32 Million
MTV Films' JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA punked Alfonso Cuaron's box office hit GRAVITY at the weekend box office with $32 million.
GRAVITY, which had been sitting in the top slot since its opening at the beginning of October, took the second spot this weekend, adding $20.3 million to its total, which now rests just under the $200 million mark.
Johnny Knoxville stars in BAD GRANDPA as 'Irving Zisman', an 86-year-old prankster, with Jackson Nicoll as his 8-year-old grandson Billy. The pair travel across the country punking people in the signature "Jackass" style. The film is directed by Jeff Tremaine and cost just $15 million to produce.
Meanwhile, THE COUNSELOR, featuring a screenplay from author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) and directed by Ridley Scott, came in fourth with $8 million in its opening weekend. The movie stars Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt.
In THE COUNSELOR, McCarthy -- making his screenwriting debut -- and Scott interweave the author's characteristic wit and dark humor with a nightmarish scenario, in which a respected lawyer's one-time dalliance with an illegal business deal spirals out of control.
Sony's CAPTAIN PHILLIPS with Tom Hanks took in an additional $11.8 million and the third spot, raising its total to $70 million. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 grossed $6.1 million, taking the fifth spot.
