Happy Apple Announcement Day!
Here's what's new in the 5S!
Phil Schiller has introduced the device as the "most forward thinking phone that we've ever created and that anyone has ever made."
Pre-Orders start on Friday, September 13th, in stores on September 20th.
$199, $299, $399 for 16, 32 and 64 GB options, with the usual 2 year contract. Also available, new leather casing for $40. MMm, gaudy.
As rumored, the 5S will indeed come with a fingerprint reader, including a touch ID capacitive sensor, that's 170 microns thin and will be built directly into the home button with 360 degree readability (from any direction) as well as capturing 'sub-epidermal skin layers' in 550 PPI resolution. The ring will detect when you're finger is on the button, without pressing it. You'll be able to use the new fingerprint scan to do other activities, like authenticating in iTunes, buying Apps, etc. Good news, it won't be stored on Apple's servers, so you will be safe from the NSA using it.
Color us intrigued. Coming as confirmed in Slate, Gold and Silver, the intro video feauted melting metal and the first look at the device show a larger LED and the three colors that we expected. How does APple describe the colors? Silver, Gold, and a new 'Space Gray'.
