HDMI 2.0 Specification Receives Popular Science Magazine's “Best of What's New Award” for One of 2013's Innovations of the Year
Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification was developed by the HDMI Forum's Technical Working Group whose 88 members represent some of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, personal computers, mobile devices, cables and components. The new Specification offers a significant increase in bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution; 32 audio channels; as well as dynamic auto lip-sync and extensions to CEC.
“For more than a quarter century, Popular Science has devoted its December issue to the year's most remarkable innovations. The Best of What's New Awards is our magazine's top honor, and the 100 awardees are selected from a pool of thousands. Each winner is handpicked and revolutionary in its own way. Whether they're poised to change the world or simply your living room, the Best of What's New awardees challenge us to see the future in a new light,” said Cliff Ransom, executive editor of Popular Science Magazine.
Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification and does not define new cables or new connectors. Current High Speed cables (category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth.
“Popular Science Magazine has been a leading source of science and technology news for decades and we are honored that they have chosen Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification as one of their innovations of the year,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. “The increased bandwidth introduced by HDMI 2.0 represents a major milestone in the continued development of the Specification and provides the infrastructure for new features that will drive the next generation of consumer entertainment.”
