Amazon Shoots Down Free Smartphone Reports
Amid recent reports that Amazon would be unveiling a free smartphone this year, the online marketplace has officially struck down such rumors.
In a statement released to Mashable, Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener said: "We have no plans to offer a phone this year...[and] if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free."
The rumors arose after former Wall Street Journal writer Jessica Lessin published an exclusive report, stating that "one person familiar with the effort said the company has talked to wireless carriers about offering its phones, though it is expected to offer them directly to consumers through its website. A launch date also is unclear."
As Mashable notes, smartphone stories have followed Amazon since the release of its supremely successful Kindle, including reports featured in the WSJ and on All Things D.
The news comes the day before Apple's upcoming announcement tomorrow, expected to unveil a spec-bumped iPhone 5S and a spec-decreased, price decreased iPhone 5C.
