Broadwayworld.com recently attended an exclusive event that celebrated wines from Sardinia by Cantina Santa Maria La Palma. We were very impressed by the extraordinary selection of fine wines.

The luncheon and wine tasting was hosted at Sfoglia, the stylish Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Sfoglia's gourmet Italian cuisine included five delicious, wonderfully presented courses. The Antipasti, Primi, Secondo, Contorno and Dolce were perfectly paired with Sardinian wines that includEd White, red, rose and sparkling varieties.

Cantina Santa Maria La Palma is an agriculturAl Cooperative corporation in Sardinia, the second largest island in Italy and the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The cooperative began in 1959 to cultivate grapes and produce wines. It is based in Santa Maria La Palma, near the town of Alghero in the area called Nurra. They support the promotion and development of agricultural production for about 300 members through the activities of cultivation, harvesting, vinification, bottling, and marketing the products of more than 700 hectares (a hectare is equivalent to 2.471 acres) of vineyards. In 2015 alone, Cantina Santa Maria La Palma sold more than 4 million bottles of wine. Their production makes them one of the most important economic companies in Sardinia.

Grapes grown on the estates in Sardinia include Vermentino, Cannonau, Cagnulari and Monica. Other varieties of grapes like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown, but in a lesser volume. Their most significant crop is the Vermentino, a grape of ancient origin that is deeply connected with the Mediterranean basin of Sardinia. Vermentino covers about 60% of their total production making Cantina Santa Maria La Palma the largest producer of Vermentino grapes in all of Italy. While their most popular wines are made entirely of Vermentino grapes, there are many other excellent choices to explore.

Santa Maria La Palma works to promote innovation, research as well as sustainability and strives to work in harmony with the beautiful nature of Sardinia. They produce wines that have reasonable pricing as well as premium selections. Look for them the next time you are making your wine purchases or when dining and enjoy the opportunity to savor and sip Sardinian wines.
