The recently re-launched Cutting Room is on East 32nd Street is our "Bar of the Week." Convenient to the theater district and the midtown area, this spot has a distinctive hard-rock feel, but wholly elegant.

By and large, the atmosphere is reminiscent of vintage Stones or Elvis Costello rather than of the punk or heavy metal that seems to dominate American airwaves. Upholstered chairs, wrap-around balconies, and a chandelier made of electric guitars set the mood.

The nightly entertainment and musical acts have a real variety that suits every taste. The Cutting Room presents performances that include multi-generation musician families, country superstars, rhythm and blues musicians, brilliant instrumentalists and great singers who call to mind pre-fame, pre-Grammy Adele.

The cocktails, appropriately enough, allude to classic rock. Based on its menu description, the Van Halen-themed, Hot for Teacher looks a little like a margarita, but packs a very different kind of kick. True to its name, it delivers a lot of jalapeno-infused heat. The Figgy Pop is dominated by a wholly different flavor as the bubbly soda plays against the drink's fig-infused vodka. Both of these drinks are anchored by a single strong effect that will keep you alert for the next song on the set and the next sip. Their beverage program also includes a great selection of beer, wine, and spirits.

Where food is concerned, the Cutting Room both pleases and surprises. Everyone loves brioche. They use this classic French bread to fine effect in their popular Spicy Lamb Sliders ($12). These miniature burgers have an excess of flavor and an unparalleled melt-in-your mouth texture with juicy cherry tomatoes and crisp cucumbers that add just the right contrasts.

The Reuben Cigars ($10) are a terrific appetizer: part reuben, part oversized spring roll, each of these offers a deliciously flaky outside and a moist, tangy interior. Try the 32nd Street Burger ($17) with gruyere and roasted cipollini onions for an upscale spin on pub fare, or the 24th Street Burger ($17) with pepperjack, avocado, and chipotle mayo for a more Southwestern take. In a city of standout lobster rolls, The Cutting Room distinguishes theirs with premium toppings: lemon yogurt cilantro aioli, avocado, and heirloom tomatoes. And, there's even more to their menu with a nice selection of salads, entrees, sides, and desserts.

The Cutting Room is a spot that you will return to frequently, before or after theater, just for the show, or for their delicious fare.
