José Manuel Carreño to Perform in Ballet San Jose's Production of CARMEN, 5/9-11

Ballet San Jose Artistic Director and former star of American Ballet Theatre, English National Ballet and the Royal Ballet José Manuel Carreño will take the stage for the first time in more than a year for his debut in the role of Don José in Roland Petit's Carmen, partnering Ballet San Jose Principal Dancer Alexsandra Meijer in the title role, in two performances: Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, at 8 pm. The roles will be performed by Ommi Pipit-Suksun and Rudy Candia for the Sunday, May 11 ,1:30 pm performance, and the program also features the Company premiere of Twyla Tharp's In the Upper Room. All performances of Carmen will feature full orchestral accompaniment by Symphony Silicon Valley under the baton of Paul Polivnick and there will be a pre-performance talk free to all ticket-holders 45-minutes prior to each performance. Dance Theatre of Harlem's 2014 NYC Season Celebrates 45 Years, Now thru 4/27

In celebration of its 45th anniversary, Dance Theatre of Harlem's 2014 New York City season at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Through its repertory of over 100 works, Ballet Hispanico attempts to represent the diversity of Latino culture. NUNO SILVA is a highly individual artist whose career spans contemporary dance, classical opera, fado singing and West End musicals. Known to dance audiences for his muscular physicality and fine fado singing - particularly as the prodigal son in Arthur Pita's 'God's Garden' - and to West End audiences from his dazzling performance in 'Cabaret' at the Savoy Theatre and his inventive, physical theatre role in 'The Light Princess' at the National Theatre, Nuno returns to his first love, the fado music of Portugal in his own show A Darker Shade of Fado which kicks off a UK tour at the Lighthouse in Poole on April 26th. Zvi Dance Receives NEA Art Works Grant

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that ZviDance is one of 886 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. ZviDance is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support Artistic Director, Zvi Gotheiner's newest work: Surveillance - a contemporary dance and multimedia piece which explores the realities behind the surveillance camera. New York Theatre Ballet Receives NEA Art Works Grant

New York Theatre Ballet has been recommended for a National Endowment for the Arts Art Works grant for its upcoming revival of Merce Cunningham's 1964 dance piece, Cross Currents, which will premiere as the centerpiece of the NYTB Repertory '15: Legends & Visionaries program. The program will be performed at New York City's Florence Gould Hall in March and April 2015 and for tour audiences throughout the United States in 2015. (more...)

Los Angeles' 13th Annual Dance Media Festival to Run 6/6-8 & 13

Celebrating the vibrant art of dance, Dance Camera West presents the 13th Annual Dance Media Film Festival, a public event incorporating dance explored through film, live performance, and architectural art. Several free live dance performances, an outdoor movie screening, a family-fun Dance-Along, Lestor Horton Dance Awards ceremony, and over 20 shorts and long-form films and documentaries to be screened during the festival taking place in downtown Los Angeles on June 6, 7, 8, and 13, 2014. Venues include The Music Center, Grand Park, REDCAT, The Museum of Contemporary Art, and Union Station. All outdoor events are free to the public. This year's theme of 'Restructure' includes a large-scale 'fast-formal' sculpture created specifically for the festival by artist Gustavo Godoy and co-commissioned by The Music Center, making its debut with a live dance performance with LA's own BODYTRAFFIC dance company. In addition, a special commission by Grand Park of an adaptation by L.A. Contemporary Dance Company of a celebrated work will be performed live in the park and the inaugural CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition where the winning college and high school films will receive $10,000 in cash and scholarship prizes. Cynthia King Dance Studio Opens Location in Flatbush

Cynthia King Dance Studio, a 12-year Brooklyn institution offering dance training to children aged 2 and up, will celebrate the grand opening of its second Brooklyn location, now in Flatbush, with three free Open House events on Saturdays, May 17, 24 and 31 from 2:00-5:00 PM. The studio will welcome Brooklyn families to tour the spacious new facility, meet studio teachers and learn about its exciting array of dance classes and programs.
