New York Live Arts will present the world premieres of niv Acosta's i shot denzel and Tess Dworman's macromen during a shared evening of new work, January 30 - February 1, 2014, at 7:30pm.

In i shot denzel, Acosta presents the sixth incarnation of a three-year series of "denzels." Representing black masculine identity in performance, the character of "denzel" is seen from Acosta's perspective as a queer trans-masculine identified young black artist. In the work, Acosta explores ideas including death, grieving, original philosophical text, vogueing and fear, and challenges normativity, complacency and impossibility. i shot denzel is devoid of the presence of past "denzels" and includes a physically challenging solo that explores blackness within the context of contemporary or classical movement. i shot denzel features Acosta along with performers Yessenia Acosta, Lydia Berg-Hammond, Lee Free, Amy Gall, Caitlin Marz, Jo Pang, Julia Read, Aleksei Wagner and Gary Zema.

Dworman, who appeared on New York Live Arts' stage most recently in Tere O'Connor's Secret Mary, will present her newest work, macromen. This work zooms in, on a micro scale, to physical states that construct theatricality in the body. Balletic postures are affected by abstract qualities and textures that explore virtuosity on a molecular level. In addition to Dworman, the work features dancers Kyli Kleven and Caitlin Marz, with lighting design by Elliott Jenetopulos and an original score by Steve May.

Performances will take place in New York Live Arts' Theater. A Come Early Video Installation by Anna Pinkas and Lani Rodriguez on view in the Lobby and a Stay Late Discussion with the artists moderated by Marissa Perel will also be featured with the shows. Tickets are $20 and $15. Tickets may be purchased online at tickets.newyorklivearts.org, by phone at 212-924-0077 and in person at the box office. Box Office hours are Monday to Friday from 1 to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 8pm.
