Nagata Shachu to Present a Special Collaboration with Jeng Yi at Harbourfront Centre's Enwave Theatre, June 13

On June 13, 2014 at 8:00pm, the compelling Japanese Taiko Drums of NAGATA SHACHU will join forces with Toronto's Korean drum and dance powerhouse, JENG YI at the Enwave Theatre, Harbourfront Centre. These two highly acclaimed groups will work together to create new music and dance works rooted in the traditional performing arts of Japan, Korea and beyond!

NAGATA SHACHU (formerly Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble), based in Toronto, Canada, has enthralled audiences with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese Taiko Drum since its formation 15 years ago. The ensemble has toured widely throughout North America and overseas, performing in theatres, concert halls, and major music festivals.

JENG YI is a Korean drum and dance ensemble based in Toronto. The group performs an exciting repertoire of original compositions, dance works, and traditional pieces. When not touring, the ensemble is busy creating and mounting innovative performances in Toronto. JENG YI has produced a variety of exciting shows including intimate music recitals, site-specific works, interactive shows for young audiences, and large-scale theatrical productions.

Charles Hong is the artistic director and primary composer of JENG YI. In 1992 he travelled to Seoul, South Korea, and for four years he apprenticed under master drummer Kim Duk Soo. He has been playing the Korean drums for twenty-three years, and has been teaching courses in Korean drumming at York University and the University of Toronto. He also received the 2008 Dora award for Outstanding Sound Design/Composition in the dance category.

The collaboration with JENG YI will be the final concert in NAGATA SHACHU's subscription season at Harbourfront Centre and 15th Anniversary celebrations. Previous concerts included an exclusive performance with leading shakuhachi (Japanese end-blown bamboo flute) player Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos and a performance that marked the release of the group's sixth CD, Hymus Road, named after the street where their studio is located.
