On three stories of scaffolding as dusk approaches, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre and Danza Floricanto/USA will present EXPULSION - an evocative cross-cultural public art performance. The two Los Angeles dance companies will fuse their distinctive choreographic styles - site-specific work and traditional Mexican folk dance - into a dynamic intersection of the contemporary and traditional worlds.

An interdisciplinary work at the intersection of performance, urban renewal, and community engagement, EXPULSION will contribute to the social ecology of East Los Angeles. Transforming the vacant lot at East 1st Street and North Boyle Avenue across from the historic Boyle Hotel and Mariachi Plaza de Los Angeles with community public art, Artistic Directors Heidi Duckler and Gema Sandoval will enliven the empty space through bold movement and conversation. The EXPULSION performance addresses the universal idea of "home" and how one builds and shapes their sense of belonging. As the sixth installment of HDDT's EXPULSION Series, this new rendition will uniquely combine HDDT's athletic movement and Danza Floricanto's vibrant footwork.

The project will foster awareness, dialogue, and cross-cultural collaboration through open rehearsals and a mini- series of Curbside Conversations (pre/post performance panels). Before the performance, with the support of the East Los Angeles Community Corporation, HDDT will actively engage the community by hosting a conversation led by cultural, political, and neighborhood leaders on site to inspire further understanding and dialogue.
