In an all-new interview with PEOPLE, Marissa Jaret Winokur, who won the Tony Award for her portrayal of Tracy Turnblad in the 2002 Broadway musical HAIRSPRAY, and Ricki Lake, who originated the role in John Waters' 1988 hit film "Hairspray", discuss their fond memories of playing the iconic character. They are joined by newcomer Maddie Baillio who will play the optimistic teen in NBC's HAIRSPRAY LIVE!, airing December 7th.

Commenting on the way the character opened doors for women of all sizes Lake offers, "I love the fact that I've been able to reinvent myself. Being an actress is difficult enough, and being able to play the ingenue when you don't look like the typical ingenue is incredible."

Winokur recalls the moment she knew she was destined to play the role sharing, "I remember seeing the movie for the first time and thinking, 'She's doing it. I can do it too!' "

Comments Baillio on the message of the show, "I think Hairspray is just as relevant today as it would have been in the '60s, with segregation and body positivity. That's a huge thing now. I think this is a really great time for the show to come back."

In other exciting news, the magazine reports that both Winokur and Lake will make cameo appearances on NBC's live broadcast. No further details were given on their roles.

Tracy's mother is the indomitable Edna Turnblad, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white "Corny Collins Show."
