Ballet Folclorico da Bahia Brings Brazil to Jones Hall on Today

The only professional folk Dance Company of its kind in Brazil, Balé Folclórico da Bahia will return to Houston on Friday, January 13th, at 8 p.m. in Jones Hall, presented by Society for the Performing Arts.

Balé Folclórico da Bahia has celebrated massive success in its nearly thirty-year history. Under the artistic direction of José Carlos Arandiba, the 38-member company includes dancers, musicians, and singers that reflect the best in Bahian folkloric art.

Hailing from Bahia in northern Brazil, which is said to be the "most African part of Brazil," the company draws from those roots, and includes capoeira, samba, and all the excitement and color of the legendary Brazilian celebration of Carnival.

Balé Folclórico da Bahia performs with an understanding of the rich heritage and culture they present, all viewed through a contemporary vision. This irresistible troupe is beloved for its fiery, intense dancing and unstoppable energy.

Founded in 1966, Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) is the largest independent non-profit presenting organization in the Southwest. Since its inception, SPA has sponsored more than 1,000 performances of the world's finest music, dance and theater events, in adherence to the belief that the arts are fundamental to the overall enrichment and quality of life within the community. In addition to presenting artists, SPA seeks to provide a variety of learning experiences for adults and children through master classes, lectures and special student performances, as well as build relationships between the performing arts and other interests within the greater Houston area and throughout the state of Texas.
