10 Hairy Legs Sets 2016 New York Season, 6/23-26

10 Hairy Legs, the all-male repertory dance company, returns to New York Live Arts for its fourth consecutive New York Season for four performances June 23-26. Continuing to showcase the company's extensive repertory that celebrates and explores the artistry of the male dancer, this season features 3 World Premiere works and the return of David Parker's "Slapstuck."

Varone's work, entitled "mark," is a quartet set to the music of Holly Herndon. Varone noted, "It was great to work through this and find a place that looked like the sound but also had its own structural identity." Herndon's work is primarily computer-based and often uses the visual programming language Max/MSP to create custom instruments and vocal processes. Award-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone works in dance, theatre, opera, film, and fashion. He is a passionate educator and articulate advocate for dance. By any measure, his work is extraordinary for its emotional range, kinetic breadth and the many arenas in which he works. Artistic Director Randy James commented, "It's riveting, deeply complex yet so simple and clear - rhythmically rich."

This is Tiffany Mills' second work for the company. Choreographer and artistic director of the NYC-based Tiffany Mills Company, her work has become known for its exploration of the human psyche, risk-taking partnering, and collaboration across forms. Entitled, "Should We Go?" it is loosely based on Samuel Beckett's seminal "Waiting for Godot." Composer and Musician Peter Whitehead playing his original score will accompany the work live at all performances. Mills stated, "It is a pleasure working with the energy and athleticism of 10HL. When I walk into the studio I am always greeted with enthusiasm. To build material with 10HL, I engaged the dancers collaboratively, as I do with the Tiffany Mills Company. Phrases were created then pulled apart and manipulated; fundamental partnering concepts were taught and then tasks were given to create fresh partnering material based on the dancers' personas. Throughout, we laughed, as we uncovered truths about ourselves, weaving them into the folds of this dance/theater work." This work is underwritten in part by Major Grants from The O'Donnell Green Music and Dance Foundation and New Music USA.

Megan Williams' quartet, entitled "Quadrivium" is set to "New York Counterpoint," a lush Steve Reich score, Quadrivium digs into the intrinsic space held by memories of boyhood play and social behavior, male preening rituals, and the desire to create a folk dance for the 21st century. A long-time member of The Mark Morris Group, Williams also worked extensively with Ohad Naharin, Laura Glenn and Mark Haim. "Slapstuck" is known for its percussive ripping Velcro "score" created by bodies colliding in surprising ways. Winner: 2002 Bessie Award for Design. Parker stated, "Working with Randy James' excellent company, 10 Hairy Legs, has felt to me like coming home. Randy has cultivated a creative community that prizes generosity, virtuosity, wit, theatrical savvy and a sense of adventure. Over the past four years, Randy has allowed me to translate and reimagine three of my most cherished works... I was immediately struck by the technical finesse, rhythmic acuity and comic timing of the cast members." Tickets are $25 for Adults and $20 for Students, Artists and Groups of 10 or more.
