Will Smith, U2 to Be First Guests on TONIGHT SHOW WITH JIMMY FALLON
Will Smith and U2 have been booked as the guests for the premiere of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," set for Monday, February 17.
Smith is one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood. Twice nominated for an Oscar ("Ali," "The Pursuit of Happyness"), he is also an established recording artist who has won four Grammy Awards. Smith will next star in Warner Bros.' "Focus."
One of the biggest rock bands in the world, U2 - lead singer Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. - is set to release its newest album in 2014. The 22-time Grammy Award winning band, whose last album was 2009's "No Line on the Horizon," was just nominated for an Academy Award and recently won its second Golden Globe Award for best original song for "Ordinary Love," from the film "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom."
At NBC's Television Critics Association winter previews yesterday, Fallon gushed that it was both "surreal" and an "honor" to follow in the footsteps of legendary talk show host Johnny Carson. "It means a lot to me," he said. "I don't want to let anyone down. I want everyone to know I'm going to work as hard as I can." He also explained that he will reinstate the show's original title, replacing the word 'With' with 'Starring.' "It's an homage, a little tip of the cap to the origins of the show," he said. "'Starring' was like, hey, it's the business, it's Hollywood, it's glamorous."
A longer monologue is also in store for viewers, per the advice of his predecessor, Jay Leno. He also shared that he has no plans to adjust the new show for the earlier 11:30 pm time slot. "I don't feel like I have to win over [anyone]," he said "I am who I am. You can see my work."
He also teased that his good buddy Justin Timberlake, a popular 'Late Night' guest, will continue to make frequent appearances on his new show. "Timberlake, whenever he's available to play, he's always great to play with," Fallon said. "He's always there for me. That's what friends are for."
