JUNCAL STREET "A FLAMENCO PERFORMANCE"
(World Music and Dance)
Wed, Sep 4, 8pm
$20 adv, $25 door
The word juncal defines those "aficionados" of the Flamenco art form who inhabited "cafe cantantes," where food, drink, music and dance sustained the angst and celebration of Andalusian and Gypsy life. But Juncal Street is no ordinary Flamenco show. Juncal Street was designed to pay homage to these great "juncales," while drawing global inspiration from street art and contemporary urban dance styles. Its music mixes and matches Jazz, Rock, Funk, and Blues with traditional Flamenco, all byproducts of cultural melting pots. Juncal Street stands for a new direction for Flamenco, without taking away the essence of tradition and discipline that so distinctly characterize Flamenco. Read more here.

Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, two true stalwarts of classy English pop, have reunited after three decades under the moniker of their former outfit, The Zombies. Their reunion has been enthusiastically embraced by the public, thanks to a hot band, some superlative new material, and a stage repertoire that draws heavily upon their much-cherished catalogue of Zombies and solo hits. In their day, the Zombies were one of the few English bands of the 1960s that enjoyed true global popularity, with two American number ones, chart records throughout the rest of the world, and a deep and lasting affection for their music. For instance, in early 1967, at a time when their career had almost ground to a halt in the UK, the band played to crowds of over 30,000 in the Philippines. And ironically, right after the band split, their final single "Time Of The Season" quickly became their biggest record - US radio plays for the latter song recently passed the four million mark. The Zombies' first two American singles, "She's Not There" and "Tell Her No," also remain two of the most-heavily spun vintage hits on American classic-rock radio. Read more here.

$18 adv, $22 door
Gabriel Kahane has established himself as a leading voice among a generation of young composers who are redefining music for the 21st century. Elle Magazine described Mandell's Miracle of Five as "an album of bluesy, sepia-tone postcard sent to possibilities come and gone." and Entertainment Weekly pronounced Miracle "a perfect bedtime album for grownups who ought to know better but can't help hitting the sack dreaming of true love."

Along the way, he recruited a mighty team of collaborators that include noted producer/bassist Pino Palladino; pianist/composer and fellow Blue Note artist Robert Glasper; R&B singer/songwriter/guitarist Emily King; international French-Moroccan singing star Hindi Zahra; and the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition winner Kris Bowers. PlazaCUBA & THE ARSENIO RODRIGUEZ PROJECT presents: LAS ESTRELLAS DE ARSENIO

(One of the most important figures in the history of Afro-Cuban music)
Sat, Sep 28, 8 & 10pm
8pm: $30, VIP $45
10pm: $25, VIP $40
LAS ESTRELLAS DE ARSENIO, is an All-Star ensemble of today's top NYC, LA and SF musicians, who came together for the first time in 2011, to pay tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, the Father of Salsa, on his 100th anniversary.

ARSENIO RODRIGUEZ, a descendent of enslaved Congolese, was born on August 30, 1911, in Matanzas, Cuba. Arsenio was blinded by a horse's kick at age 7, which earned him the nickname "El Ciego Maravilloso" (The Marvelous Blind One.) Rodriguez was a prolific composer and arranger, who wrote and recorded nearly a thousand songs; many of them major salsa hits even today. Considered by many to be the creator of the "Mambo", he was also the architect of the "Conjunto." The Conjunto is a revolutionary format that introduces the conga drum, a taboo at the time, because of its African origins. As composer, tresero, percussionist and bandleader, Arsenio's innovations paved the way for what would eventually morph into "SALSA," as we know it today. He lived to be one of the most important figures in the history of Afro-Cuban music. Read more here.

Vinicius Cantuária was born in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, living there until he was seven, when his family moved to Rio. As singer, songwriter, guitarist and percussionist, his career connects several zones of Brazilian music. And though his music is known for its decidedly twenty-first century feel, Cantuária's band might best be described as 'post-electronica acoustic' - a band that includes jazz bassist Paul Socolow, Michael Leonhart (the young Steely Dan trumpeter) and a rotating crew of Brazilian percussionists Nanny Assis, Mauro Refosco and legendary drummer Paulo Braga. Their repertoire typically includes songs by Jobim and Gilberto Gil, as well as Cantuária's own fund of songs. Read more here.

Earl Klugh
(GRAMMY Award-winning guitar virtuoso
touring his new, largely solo CD, HandPicked on Heads Up (part of the Concord Music Group)
Thu, Oct 3, 8pm
8pm $34, 10pm $25
The highest praise Duke Ellington would offer people he admired was to say that their music was "beyond category" - and, in many ways, that phrase exactly captures the spirit of GRAMMY Award-winning guitar virtuoso Earl Klugh and his new, largely solo CD, HandPicked on Heads Up (part of the Concord Music Group). This is a disc that clearly reflects the guitarist's view that, "Everything has its place. The fun of it is that you are not in a box. Music has no boundaries." Read more here.

10pm: Greatest hits - $46, VIP seats $70
The musical virtuosity of The Fab Faux - in actuality five of the hardest working musicians in NYC - completely up-ends the concept of a Beatles tribute band. Far beyond being extended sets of cover versions, their astounding shows are an inspired re-discovery of the Beatles' musical magic, as The Fab Faux tackles the group's most demanding material live onstage in a way that has to be experienced to be believed. Calling them, "the greatest Beatles cover band - without the wigs," Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke wrote, "the Faux invigorate the artistry of even the Beatles' most intricate studio masterpieces with top chops and Beatlemaniac glee."

THE JANUSZ PRUSINOWSKI TRIO
Co- Presented with the Polish Cultural Institute New York
(Jazz-World-Traditional Polish Fused together with a modern avant-garde approach.
Promoting forthcoming album Knee Deep In Heaven)
Sun, Oct 6, 7pm
$18 adv, $22 door
Janusz Prusinowski Trio is a group of five musicians who follow in the traditions of village masters they have personally learned from. But they are also an avant-garde band with their own characteristic sound and language of improvisation. They combine music with dance, and the archaic with the modern. What contemporary quality can be given to archaic and seemingly simple melodies and rhythms without resorting to trendy samples and loops? Listening to the Trio you can hear how traditional music of Polish villages echoes a variety of genres: the music of Chopin in its melodic pattern and the use of rubato, a shared love of improvisation with blues and jazz, a tonal sophistication shared with 20th century classical and free improv, and the energy and propulsion of rock music.
