3 December 2014, London: The Saatchi Gallery is delighted to announce that applications for this year's Saatchi Gallery / Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools are now open. The deadline for submission is 13 January 2015, via the Saatchi Gallery's website.
The Saatchi Gallery / Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools is unique in its scope and accessibility and is one of the largest international competitions open to primary, secondary and sixth form schools from around the world. Schools are invited to submit artwork by students up to the age of 18.
"Ever since we started submitting work for Art Prize for Schools 3 years ago, it has been a powerful tool in instilling confidence in our students' perception of their own talent and judgement. Art education is as much about nurturing self-belief in the student's own approach and identity within the visual arts as it is about the teaching of specific skills."Euros Rowlands, Head of Art & Design at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera in South Wales (2012 winning art department)
The Saatchi Gallery has a 30-year-long history of supporting emerging artists and bringing contemporary art to as wide an audience as possible. The Saatchi Gallery / Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools aims to support and encourage creative schoolchildren by providing them with a platform to showcase their work, and giving them the confidence to continue studying the arts.
Deutsche Bank's support of the Prize is part of the Bank's commitment to help young people access creative opportunities and fulfil their potential. The support of Deutsche Bank's youth engagement programme, Born to Be, has enabled the Saatchi Gallery to offer tailored artist-led workshops to pupils from schools in disadvantaged areas. Having the opportunity to work with specialist art materials, they increase their understanding of fine art processes, and are given support in entering the prize.
Colin Grassie, Deutsche Bank UK CEO commented. "Creative learning is an important way for many schoolchildren to engage with their studies; especially those that struggle in a traditional classroom environment. The Saatchi Gallery / Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools allows thousands of pupils to aspire to an amazing opportunity of having their work exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, For our priority schools in deprived areas the project provides access to workshops that enhance their learning. We're proud to support this Prize again in 2015."
A first prize of £10,000 will be awarded to the winning school's art department, with a further £2,000 given to the winning pupil to be spent on art and computer equipment. Two further runner-up prizes of £5,000 each will be awarded to the second and third placed schools, with a further £1,000 to each of the winning pupils. The prize money provides art departments with the ability to install state of the art computer and printing equipment and provide high quality art materials which allow pupils to explore, develop and realise their creative potential. The judging panel is made up of world renowned artists, gallery directors and critics. Notable previous judges include Sir Peter Blake, Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn, Yinka Shonibare and Bob and Roberta Smith. Schools can enter their pupils' work online via the Saatchi Gallery's website http://www.saatchigallery.com/portfolio/
