Amidst the current national conversations pertaining to privilege, systemic racism, anger and fear, the timely and relevant new play, LET The Devil TAKE THE HINDMOST, premieres at the SoHo Playhouse (15 Vandam Street) August 12- August 23th as part of the New York International Fringe Festival.

Set in Washington D.C. 1969, the production eerily echoes our current U.S. cultural and political climate. It delves deep into stereotypes about the "angry black woman" and how anger is evaluated through the lens of privilege, devaluing individuals' purpose of anger.

LET The Devil TAKE THE HINDMOST is set in 1969 Washington DC. Vera, an African American math teacher, and her husband Pablo, a Latino Art History Professor, attempt to make sense of a violent decade, their rocky marriage, and what the future holds for their politically active daughter.

Playwright Maya Contreras' love of the arts has given her a substantial background in writing and production. She's conducted interviews with the iconic fashion designer Calvin Klein, comedy television stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson ('Broad City'), The Cast of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Comedian Bill Burr and Television Producer and Comedy Writer Stephen Merchant ('The Office', 'Extras', UK) and many more. Her plays' 'The Bloodline of Shadrick Grace' and 'On The Use and Disadvantages of Leaving' were both Official FringeNYC Selections consecutively in 2014 and 2015. Her short film Final Portrait wrapped production in London in Winter 2016. Her newest play, 'Let The Devil Take The Hindmost', will makes is world premiere during FringeNYC 20th Anniversary Season August 2016. As an artist management associate Maya's had the privilege of being on the management team for Academy Award winner Marvin Hamlisch, Academy Award winner Bill Conti, Tony Award winning Actress Betty Buckley, Grammy award winning conductor Sir Simon Rattle, to name a few. She is thrilled to be a co-host for PBS' Brewed in NY, coming this Fall 2016.

Director Lorca Peress specializes in developing multicultural and multidisciplinary theatre, dance-theatre, musicals, opera and theatrical multimedia projects. She has been Founding Artistic Director of MultiStages since 1997. Recent Credits: Desi Moreno-Penson's "Comida de Puta (F#%ing Lousy Food,") produced by MultiStages, HOLA Award; a 200 person fully-staged production of Leonard Bernstein's "MASS" (QC-CUNY Colden Center); the Puerto Rican/Taino musical drama "Temple of the Souls" by Anita Velez-Mitchell, music by Dean Landon & Anika Paris, book by Velez-Mitchell, Paris and Lorca Peress (6 Innovative Theatre Nominations, 4 HOLA Awards); Nichole Thompson Adams' "Black Girl You've Been Gentrified"(Public Theatre); and original operas by Bruce Saylor. Producing and Directing Awards include 4 MCAF Awards, 2015 Innovative Theatre Nomination for Outstanding Production, Dramatists Guild Fund Award, 2015 Taino Areito Award, 5 HOLA Awards, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the National Opera Competition, 2 Women in Arts and Media Coalition Collaboration Honorable Mentions and a La MaMa INKY in Playwriting. Memberships: League of Professional Theatre Women (Co-President 2011-14), Creative Network for the Federal Affairs Administration Office of the Governor of Puerto Rico, SDC, AEA, SAG-AFTRA. Lorca is a Bennington College and NTI graduate, her professional studies include classes with Gene Frankel, Leonard Melfi, Shelly Winters, and at the Lee Strasberg Institute.
