Johnny Depp's Anti-Trump Sentiments Rock Conservatives

Johnny Depp is under fire from conservatives this this week for comments he made joking that he endorsed the assassination of Donald Trump

The comments which Depp made during a performance at the Glastonbury Festival in England. were an address to the crowd.

"Can we bring Trump here?" Depp asked the audience, following up with, "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?" referencing the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at the hands of actor, John Wilkes booth.

"I want to clarify. I'm not an actor. I lie for a living," Depp mentioned in closing.

Conservative pundits have capitalized on the story, likening the comments to other recent controversies alluding to violence toward Trump, including comedian Kathy Griffin's severed head photos of the president and the Public Theater's production of Julius Caesar, which casts the president in the title role of the slain dictator.

The White House issued a response on Friday reading: "President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it's sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead. I hope that some of Mr. Depp's colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official."

Depp later issued an apology to People magazine following the remarks reading: "I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump. It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone."
