On Saturday night, those in the Kitchener area had the opportunity to spend the evening and share some laughs with a Tony, Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award-winning artist! Whoopi Goldberg was in town, performing some comedy for a full house at Centre in the Square, and she did not disappoint.

Ms. Goldberg commented during the Q&A session that she never really considered herself as a 'stand-up comedienne' but instead, as a good storyteller. Her comedy was based on real-life incidents and material that is often thought of as taboo...but, as she said from the outset of her show, she doesn't give a $%&#. Ms. Goldberg's no-nonsense, 'take it or leave it' attitude is what brought many fans to Centre in the Square on Saturday night, and that's exactly what they got. That said, Ms. Goldberg was also incredibly gracious and seemed to genuinely enjoy the venue and the people of Kitchener. The feeling was certainly reciprocated, as the audience gave her a standing ovation before the show even began.

For the entire show, Ms. Goldberg was very engaging with the audience, and always appeared at ease. She demonstrated that she was a true pro when she didn't miss a beat after she seemed to briefly forget what was next in her set. She continued to be funny and engaging even as she quickly sifted through a notebook to see what was next.

After the comedy portion of the show, Whoopi participated in a Question and Answer session with the audience. She took the time to answer every question, and did so with just as much wit that she displayed during her comedy set. In case you didn't know...Whoopi Goldberg is an incredibly funny person. She answered questions that ranged from "What was it like to work on Star Trek" (she stated that she loved being part of "star Trek" because as a child, it was through this show that she learned "there were black people in the future") to "If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you bring with you". Her answers were thoughtful and funny, and she seemed to have a great story for everything.

It's not every day that a star this big has a show in small town Canada, and when asked about it, Ms. Goldberg pointed out that Centre in the Square asked her, and she was happy to oblige. Kudos to Whoopi and to Centre in the Square! Whoopi later tweeted about how much she enjoyed the experience. The feeling was mutual.

This is just one of many exciting performances lined up this season at Kitchener's Centre in the Square. Other performers to look forward to include Joan Osborne, B.B. King, Wanda Sykes, Matthew Good, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and productions such as Anne of Green Gables, Greenday's American Idiot, and many more.
