BWW Live Recap: Lots of Laughs as Theatre Stars Shine at 72nd Golden Globes

Film and television stars (and audiences) are sure to come out in droves when funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take the stage for a final time (so they say!) to host the Golden Globes, tonight on NBC at 8pm/7c. While the annual ceremony wouldn't be as geared toward theatre people as, say, the TONY AWARDS (June 7th on CBS for those who need a heads-up), this year is a bit different, with a collection of nominees having Broadway experience, and a few films up for nods having ties to theatre as well.

To start, of course, we have to mention that Sondheim's Broadway-blockbuster-turned-hit-movie INTO THE WOODS, is nominated for Best Picture, along with nods for Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, and we'll acknowledge that Best Picture-nominated BIRDMAN is not only about a Broadway play, and co-stars GG-nominated Emma Stone (currently appearing in CABARET), but parts of the film were actually shot on location at the St. James Theatre!

But, that's not all. Broadway alums Jessica Chastain, Eddie Redmayne, Ethan Hawke, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Leiv Schreiber, Viola Davis, Edie Falco, Jeffrey Tambor, William H. Macy, Jessica Lange and Frances McDormand are all among those nominated tonight. In addition to the aforementioned Stone, current Broadway performers Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Wilson, and Alan Cumming have also garnered nods for their respective work in either TV or film.

It should also be mentioned that the film adaptation of Larry Kramer's 2011 Best Revival of a Play Tony-winner THE NORMAL HEART is up for Best Television Film (along with the performances of Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer), and the 2014 modern adaptation of ANNIE garnered two nominations; one for the new song, "Opportunity," performed by Grammy-nominated Sia, and one for Annie herself, pint-size powerhouse Quvenzanhé Wallis.

And if that weren't enough, even some of the presenters are theatre alums. Among them are Tony winner Lily Tomlin, 2006's THE COLOR PURPLE producer Oprah Winfrey, Amy Adams - who hasn't starred on Broadway *yet*, but did take on the role of the Baker's Wife in a 2012 Central Park production of INTO THE WOODS - and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who not only graced Broadway in 2010's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, but walked away from that year's Tony night as Best Actress in a Musical.

7:38pm - Theatre Alert: Just saw a commercial for AMERICAN SNIPER. The movie stars Bradley Cooper, currently on Broadway in THE ELEPHANT MAN, and Sienna Miller, set to step in to CABARET on February 17th.
