August events at Bookworks focus on local nature, history, and literature with local authors visiting all month.

Birding and wildflower identification are popular past times in Albuqueruqe this time of the year. Bookworks hosts Judy Liddell and Barbara Hussey for their book, Birding Hot Spots of Central and Northern New Mexico on August 4, 7pm and Larry Littlefield and pearl Burns for their book Wildflowers of Central and Northern New Mexico on August 20.

Science and nature are a big focus this month. Charles Curtin visits August 13 with his book, The Science of Open Spaces.Mark Gardener explores water use and talks about his new book, Wastewater Gardener on August 20.

Albuquerque native and now Denver resident and journalist Megan Feldman Bettencourt has published her first book,Triumph of the Heart, where she embarks on a quest to understand the complex idea of forgiveness, drawing on the latest research showing that forgiveness can provide a range of health benefits, from relieving depression to decreasing high blood pressure. Her hometown book launch is August 15 at the Center for Spiritual Living at 2801 Louisiana NE.

Other local authors reading in August include Jim Howell, author of Countdown to Atomgeddon on August 6; Bill Galbreth, a local dentist and author of Mark of the Mob, reads at Bookworks and offers customers a special dental discount on August 8; Irene Blea reads from her new novel, Daughters of the West Mesa, set around the West Mesa murders, on August 16.

Indian Market weekend is August 22 and 23 and Bookworks features two important Native American artists. Saturday, August 22 at 3pm, Lee Marmon visits with Tom Corbett for their University of New Mexico photography book, Laguna Pueblo. On Sunday, August 23, Joy Harjo revisits Bookworks reading poetry from her new W.W. Norton poetry collection,Conflict Resolution for Spiritual Beings. (Harjo also plays in Santa Fe at the bandstand earlier that day.)

August launches off with a kids' feature at Animal Humane New Mexico on August 1, where Bookworks will host a special Seuss story time upon the release of a new Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get? Attendees are invited to dress in their favorite Dr. Seuss character, hear the story, and check out the Animal Humane campus and animals for adoption. Other kids' features include Jacqueline Kelly on August 29 with a new book, The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate, a follow-up to her school reading and book club favorite, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Caroline Rose Starr, an Albuquerque middle grades author who made a name with her award-winning novel May B. is back with a new book, Over in the Wetlands, on August 22.
