Maestro Mei-Ann Chen previews Chicago Sinfonietta's "Political Awakenings" concerts in the video! The concerts will take place tonight, April 19 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago, and April 20th at Wentz Concert Hall on the campus of North Central College in Naperville.

Political Awakenings unites music from European, Middle Eastern and African-American cultures to bridge understanding of the universal human yearning for freedom and dignity. Palestinian-American composer Simon Shaheen performs his Oud Concerto, paired with the spiritual based Negro Folk Symphony by William Levi Dawson. A lively rendition of Mozart's Turkish-inflected overture from Abduction from the Seraglio sets the stage.

Chicago Sinfoniettta music director Mei-Ann Chen talks about these diverse voices and what they can tell us in our Digital Guide to next weekend's concerts.
