The York Symphony Orchestra will present A Brave New World on Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York. It is the fourth concert of the 2016-2017 Classical Series, A Musical Journey Through Time. The performance will be a feast for the senses including guest appearances from a master pianist, belly dancers and puppeteers.

Guest pianist Haochen Zhang joins the orchestra for Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2, one of the composer's most popular pieces. Zhang, Gold Medal Winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, has performed for audiences around the globe with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity. A clear prodigy, Zhang began his musical career at age 11 as a student at the Shenzhen Arts School in China before completing his studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

"A Brave New World celebrates an era where composers were experimenting and testing limits in classical music," said Lawrence Golan, music director and conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "The era gave birth to music compositions that challenged the standard with sensual and powerful music. I am looking forward to introducing the talents of pianist Haochen Zhang to our audiences in the multi-dimensional concert."

The performance will also include R. Strauss' "Dance of the Seven Veils" from Salome with guest performers from the Aubergine Belly Dance Troupe; and Stravinsky's Petrushka, with guest puppeteers from the Half Mad Theatre. The Aubergine Belly Dance Troupe, based in Baltimore, Maryland, brings a colorful and exciting dynamic to the "Dance of the Seven Veils," which recounts the story of Salome dancing for King Herod Antipas. The puppeteers from the Half Mad Theatre, based in Washington, D.C., will join the orchestra for Petrushka, incorporating puppets to tell the story inspired by the Russian version of the Punch and Judy puppet tradition.
