WHAT: Andrey Boreyko returns to lead the LA Phil and Danish-Israeli master violinist Nikolaj Znaider in three performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Fridayand Saturday, January 16 and 17, at 8 pm, and Sunday, January 18, at 2 pm. The program features the U.S. premiere of Górecki's LA Phil-commissioned Fourth Symphony. Boreyko conducted the highly anticipated world premiere of the piece with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to considerable acclaim last season.

The program opens with Alexandre Tansman's tribute to Stravinsky, Stèle - In Memoriam Igor Stravinsky, followed by Znaider performing Sibelius' renowned Violin Concerto. Closing is Górecki's Fourth Symphony. The piece, which pays homage to Górecki's Polish colleague Tansman, was unfinished at the composer's death and was completed by his son Mikolaj Górecki, based on his father's instructions.

The Friday performance is part of the LA Phil's Inside the Music with Brian Lauritzenseries. This new interactive series includes a video produced by KUSC radio DJ Lauritzen, sent to audience members prior to the performance, pre- and post-concert discussions with the host and artists, and ways to engage online for further exploration.

A prolific conductor of the great symphonic repertoire and a passionate advocate for less widely known works, Andrey Boreyko has been Music Director of Orchestre National de Belgique since September 2012. In this role he has expanded the organization's activities nationally and internationally, balancing traditional repertoire with innovative, diverse programming which includes a number of commissions from around the world. In the 2014/15 season, new works come from France (Bruno Mantovani), Turkey (Fazil Say), Russia (Alexander Raskatov), Belgium (Benoît Mernier) and USA (Sebastian Currier). This season Boreyko begins his tenure as Music Director of the Naples Philharmonic in Florida. Also much sought-after as a guest conductor in the U.S., he has worked with the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras; and the Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh and Montreal Symphony orchestras. Additionally, he holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi. Highlights of the current season include appearances with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln. Notable amongst Boreyko's discography with the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR (with whom he was Principal Guest Conductor) are Pärt's Lamentate and Silvestrov's Symphony No.6 (both for ECM records) and the premiere recording of his original version of the Suite from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for Hänssler Classics. He has also recorded Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and Lutos?awski's Chain 2 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Yarlung Records. With the Orchestre National de Belgique, Boreyko continues his extensive recording project of the complete Shostakovich symphonies, having already recorded Nos.1, 4, 6, 9 and 15 with Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR.

Nikolaj Znaider is one of the foremost violinists of today and combines a soloist career at the very highest level with a growing conducting career. A wonderfully versatile musician, Znaider has established his conductor credentials over the last several seasons, and is increasingly in demand from many of the world's leading orchestras. Znaider is a regular guest conductor with orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Halle and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra where he served as Principal Guest conductor. Following a very successful debut conducting the Cleveland Orchestra last season, Znaider has been invited to return for a two- week residency period during which he will both conduct the orchestra and play concerti conducted by Welser-Most. The 2014/15 season includes conducting and soloist collaborations with the Staatskapelle Dresden at the Osterfestspiele Salzburg and his conducting debut with the NDR Hamburg. Znaider enjoys a very special relationship with the London Symphony Orchestra, an orchestra he conducts every season.
