Urban Strings Columbus Youth Orchestra is a Central Ohio-based community youth orchestra of serious, talented, young musicians from various public, private, charter, and suburban schools throughout the metropolitan Columbus area. Urban Strings Columbus performs a multicultural repertoire of great music ranging from classical, jazz, and gospel to R&B and movie themes. This wide-ranging repertoire not only engages the participants but also provides them with an opportunity to learn various types of music to which they might not otherwise be exposed. They also incorporate bodily movements to the music to create freedom of expression through African-American influenced music.

Urban Strings announces the featured musicians of the month below!

Neveah Johnson is a violinist in Urban Strings Quarter Notes. She is in 7th grade and has demonstrated tremendous growth as a musician in orchestra and as student at school. Neveah was awarded the Twin Rivers String Scholarship award, which is funded by the Twin Rivers Chapter of Links. Her scholarship allows her the opportunity to take weekly private lessons and group lessons. Neveah also made the girls basketball team this year.

JarEd Williams (far right) is a 7th grader at Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys. Jared is a part of the "Burgundy Boys" which is a group of scholars who have achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for at least 3 consecutive grading periods. He plays the violin and saxophone and is a member of the CCPSB Jazz Band. Jared is an avid Cleveland Cavaliers fan and can be found shooting hoops whenever he has spare time--rain, shine, summer, or winter! Jared is also the fourth of five siblings and the son of very proud parents, Kevin and Carla Williams. "JarEd Williams represents the best. He plays beautifully, but above all else--his character is what shines through the most.", states Mr. Spottswood (Director of Urban Strings Columbus).

Your donations go to musicians in need. Scholarships are awarded to dedicated string players with limited means to support the development of musical skills. We also accept donated violins, violas, cellos, and basses that help musicians who may not be able to afford a stringed instrument. Donate ›
