The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Youth Orchestras Present Their Fall Concert, 11/10

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Youth Orchestras (CSOYO) open their 2014-2015 season on November 10 at 7:30pm at Ringgold High School with a concert performed by the Symphony Orchestra with Gary Wilkes conducting. Also featured in the program is the 2nd place winner of the 2014 Concerto Competition, Nacor Lantigua. The final selections on the program are the last two movements of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

Scheherazade is one of the most popular, and most beautiful, of all orchestral compositions. Rimsky-Korsakov was a master at writing for the orchestra, exploiting the beauty and power of the various instruments and instrument groups in an endless variety of combinations and colors. The music depicts the legendary Sultana and her attempt to stay alive by spinning nightly tales to distract her fearful husband (1001 Arabian Nights).

The CSOYO Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sandy Morris, will open the concert with a variety of delightful works, from Brahms to The Great Locomotive Chase. The Great Locomotive Chase is based upon an actual historical event which took place near Ringgold, GA during the Civil War when union spies attempted to destroy railroad tracks and bridges between Marietta and Chattanooga.

About Nacor Lantigua

Nacor Lantigua, age 17, has played percussion for seven years and is in his fourth season with the CSO Youth Orchestras. He studies percussion with Jim Burton and Richard Henson. Nacor also has played the piano for seven years and currently studies with Karen Archer. He is a senior at Cleveland High School where he has been a member of the Concert Band and the Jazz Band. Nacor was born in the Dominican Republic and came to the United States at three years of age with his parents, Rogelio and Maria Lantigua. Along with his brothers, Roger and Ariel, and sister, Perla, Nacor is active in music ministry throughout the region. He also enjoys reading, arranging music, singing, camping, cooking, and participating in his church youth group in his spare time.

About CSO

The mission of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera is to inspire, engage, and enrich the greater Chattanooga community through music and music education.

The 2014-15 season marks 82 seasons for the CSO, which played its first concert on November 5, 1933. The CSO, conducted by Music Director Kayoko Dan, consists of top players from the Chattanooga area as well as from across the southern region. The CSO performs a full season of Masterworks, Pops, Chamber, and Volkswagen Series concerts from September through May, as well as a variety of community, education and engagement events throughout the year.
