The organ in Christ Church has evolved from a small but significant organ of 12 stops, installed in 1873. This instrument was built by the distinguished German-born organ builder August Gern, who was foreman for Cavaillé-Coll in France and later settled in England.

Since then, the organ has undergone numerous major rebuilds and expansions, most recently in 2003 (Australian Pipe Organs/ George Stephens).

The instrument now contains 43 speaking stops distributed over 3 manuals and pedals and around 2,300 pipes, placing it amongst the larger parish church organs in Australia. Because of its heritage and subsequent additions, it fits firmly into the English Romantic school of organ building.
