Roco Chamber Orchestra Presents Intercontinental Connections Concert, 10/13

River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) continues its 2013 - 2014 ROCO Chamber Series on Sunday, October 13 at 4:00 pm with a concert inspired by musical, spiritual and physical connections called Intercontinental Connections. The performance features ROCO principal cellist Richard Belcher and pianist Kurt Stallmann. Together, the duo will perform music from three different continents (North America, Europe and Australia) including a piece composed by Mr. Stallmann, a Rice University associate professor, titled Together, Connected. Also included in the program is music by Sculthorpe, Britten, Verdi, Chopin and Ligeti. The concert will take place at the Gremillion &Co. Fine Art Annex (2504 Nottingham St.). Tickets cost $25 for General Admission, $10 for
students and are available at the door or on www.rocohouston.org

Richard Belcher. New Zealand cellist Richard Belcher has performed as a chamber
musician and soloist across the USA and internationally. Based in New York City, he is
a founding member of the Grammy-nominated Enso String Quartet, with regular
tours and performances in many of the major concert halls, including Carnegie Hall,
the Lincoln Center of New York, and the Library of Congress. Richard is also Principal
Cellist of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO), and has appeared at many
festivals, including St Bart's, Festival d'Aix en Provence, Prussia Cove, Madeline
Island, Campos do Jordao International Winter Festival, SummerFest La Jolla and the
San Miguel de Allende International Chamber Music Festival. Active in both period music as well as contemporary repertoire, he has been involved with many live and pre-recorded radio and internet broadcasts in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Richard enjoys teaching and has served as Adjunct Faculty at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and currently is on the faculty at the Interlochen Adult Chamber Music Camp. Richard moved to the USA in 1998 to study with Aldo Parisot at Yale University, and it was there in 1999 that he founded the Enso String Quartet. Other major teachers include Norman Fischer, Marc Johnson and Alexander Ivashkin. Richard plays an N.F Vuillaume cello made in 1856, and is married to the violinist Cece Belcher.

Kurt Stallmann. Kurt Stallmann devotes his energy towards synthesizing many of the
mediums available to composers today. His compositions are written for acoustic
instruments, electroacoustic combinations with interactive elements, environmental
sounds, and purely synthetic sounds. He also enjoys improvising with musicians and
frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines. Scholarly interests include
a series of psychological studies on how musical sequences can affect time
estimation. At the 2008 International Conference on Auditory Displays at IRCAM in
Paris, Stallmann gave a paper titled Auditory Stimulus Design: Musically Informed.
Stallmann currently serves as Associate Professor of music composition at Rice University's Shepherd
School of Music and as Director of the Rice Electroacoustic Music Labs (REMLABS).
