Princeton Symphony Presents BROKEN INK, Dubussy's LA MER and More!

On Sunday, May 7 at 4 pm, Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) Music Director Rossen Milanov returns to the podium to conduct the US premiere of Zhou Tian's Broken Ink and Claude Debussy's La Mer, followed by Paul Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber at the Metamorphosis concert at Richardson Auditorium. The US premiere of Broken Ink is supported by the Hangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles, co-commissioners of the work with the Hangzhou city government. Members of the Hanzhou Federation are traveling from China to Princeton to attend the May 7 concert and a reception to follow, hosted by the Princeton University Art Museum and open to all concert attendees.

PSO Executive Director Marc Uys says, "Rossen (Milanov) and I look forward to welcoming members of the Hangzhou Federation, especially Vice Chair Min Zhang to Princeton. Zhou Tian's composition pairs influences of Song dynasty poetry, an important part of Hangzhou's cultural heritage, with the sound of our Western symphonic orchestra." This is the second time members of the Hangzhou Federation have visited Princeton. They were present for the PSO's 2013 US premiere of Zhou Tian's The Grand Canal.

Critically acclaimed for his lush and distinctive musical voice, Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian's music has been performed by major orchestras at prestigious venues around the world. He is a first-prize winner of the Washington International Competition for Composition and the ASCAP/Lotte Lehmann Art Song Competition, and has held fellowships from Tanglewood and Aspen music festivals. He will discuss Broken Ink with Rossen Milanov at the 3 pm Pre-Concert Talk, free to ticket holders in Richardson Auditorium immediately prior to the concert.

The program also features two early 20th Century works by master composers. Debussy's La Mer is noted for its impressionistic depiction of the sea. Paul Hindemith's contrapuntal Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber draws the concert, and the PSO's season, to an enthusiastic and optimistic close.
