Parthenia Performs at The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields Tonight

Parthenia, New York's premiere viol consort, will present A Habsburg Songbook, a concert tonight, October 17 at 8:00 PM at The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson Street in Manhattan. This is the first event of their 2015-16 concert series, and is part of the New York Early Music Celebration 2015: El Nuevo Mundo, a Service Project of the Early Music Foundation.

Parthenia, with guests Ryland Angel, tenor and countertenor, and Charles Weaver, lute, offers a century's worth of music for connoisseurs from the time of the Habsburg Empire, featuring composers employed across 15th and 16th century Europe by regents Maximillian I, Margaret of Austria, and Charles V.

Parthenia, will perform works for viols, lute and voice by Heinrich Issac, Ludwig Senfl, Nicolas Gombert, Antonio de Cabezón, Alonso Mudarra and Jacobus Vaet, along with songs from the cancioneros of 16th century Spain, to highlight New York Early Music Celebration's Spanish theme. Parthenia is a dynamic quartet of viols which animates ancient and contemporary repertoires with a ravishing sound and a remarkable sense of ensemble. Parthenia is presented in concerts and festivals across America including Bargemusic, Music Before 1800, Maverick Concerts, The Rockport Chamber Music Festival, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Miller Theatre and the Yale Center for British Art, and in Europe at the Regensburg Tage Alter Musik. The ensemble produces its own concert series in NYC, collaborating regularly with the world's foremost early music specialists including Piffaro, Julianne Baird, Paul O'Dette, Blue Heron and ARTEK. Parthenia actively commissions and premieres works by today's composers including Eleonor Sandresky, Richard Einhorn, Phil Kline, Frances White, Max Lifchitz, Will Ayton, Nicholas Patterson and Kristin Norderval.
