The Oakland Symphony Orchestra, Oakland University's orchestra-in-residence, will open its 2015-2016 season with a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 in Varner Recital Hall. Under the direction of Dr. Gregory Cunningham, the orchestra provides an opportunity for some of the music program's finest student musicians to play alongside faculty members and other professional musicians. The OSO offers excellent performances of the finest symphonic repertoire.

At the October concert, audience members will enjoy "Festive Overture, op. 96" by Dmitry Shostakovich, "Symphony No. 4, op. 36" by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the less frequently performed "Mr. Tambourine Man; Seven Poems of Bob Dylan" by John Corigliano, with guest soprano soloist Katherine Calcamuggio.

The orchestra will give the second concert of their season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. The performance includes "Russian Easter Overture, op. 36," by Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov, "Symphony No. 1, op. 9," by Samuel Barber, and "Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, op. 73 (Emperor)," by Ludwig van Beethoven, with guest piano soloist Dr. Tian Tian, who is a new OU faculty member.

The Oakland Symphony Orchestra will perform both the October and November concerts in Varner Recital Hall, which is located on the Oakland University campus. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smartphone. Ample free parking will be available.

Tickets are $20 general and $10 for students. They may be purchased online without service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Varner Box Office on OU's campus in advance or before the show. Complete ticket information is available at oakland.edu/mtd/tickets.
