After kicking off the season with standing-room-only audiences for their SeptemberFest concerts, Longy School of Music of Bard College embraces new partners and old friends to present a colorful fall lineup. The full schedule is available at www.longy.edu/events. Highlights from the season include:

Tender Land: American Opera Scenes

October 20-21, 2016

8:00 p.m. | Edward M. Pickman Hall

America was the cradle of new opera in the 20th century. In their first performance of the year, Longy's Opera Department will perform arias and scenes from some of the most loved operas of our American homeland, including Copland's "The Tender Land" and "Now, O Lips, Say Goodbye" by Gian Carlo Menotti.

City of Fools: Medieval Songs of Rule and Misrule

Boston Camerata in collaboration with Longy School of Music of Bard College

October 22, 2016

8:00 p.m. | First Church in Boston

As we inch closer to our presidential election, this new program of songs and poems from the Middle Ages evokes the age-old themes of justice and corruption in the public sphere. Minstrel songs from medieval France and Germany, amazingly contemporary in their language, provide an amusing and sharply etched perspective on our current travails. The concert will feature sections from the "Play of Daniel," "Carmina Burana" and "Roman de Fauvel"; works by gifted musician-poets Philippe le Chancelier, Bertran de Born and Thibault de Champagne; and a very American ending!

Changing of the Guard: Election Eve

November 7, 2016

8:00 p.m. | Edward M. Pickman Hall

In January of 1944, the Boston police descended upon Symphony Hall, where Stravinsky was scheduled to conduct his own arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and threatened to remove the music from the stands on stage. The audience would not hear his arrangement that night, and Stravinsky wouldn't attempt to perform it again for more than a decade. Longy is going to explore both sides of the musical aisle on the night before we go to the polls. At this concert, curated by students, hear a blue and red version of our national anthem, songs drawn from campaign quotes and the Constitution, and music of John Cage, Martin Bresnick, Frederic Rzewski and Louis Andriessen.

Opera Bites

Boston Opera Collaborative with the Longy School of Music of Bard College

November 11-13, 2016

Friday and Saturday 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 3 p.m. | Edward M. Pickman Hall

Longy and Boston Opera Collaborative will team up again for "Opera Bites" - a fabulous weekend of opera and revelry in a cabaret-style setting, featuring the world premieres of six short works commissioned by both organizations. The evening includes works by composers Jonathan Bailey Holland, Tom Cipullo, Daniella DeMatos, John Greer, Eva Kendrick, Rhiannon Randle, Tony Solitro and Jeremy Van Buskirk.

The operas are performed in English with piano accompaniment.
