The Knitting Factory was founded in 1987 and over the years has grown into Knitting Factory Entertainment, which encompasses four clubs - in Brooklyn, Hollywood, Boise, and Spokane - several record labels and other ventures. Below is an account of the New York club's first years, written by company founder Michael Dorf.

When Slum Village emerged in the late 1990s, the highly regarded Detroit trio of T3, Baatin and Jay Dee made a startling admission: their group was a liquid association with members coming and going during the group's evolution. True to their word, Slum Village has already gone through a number of line-up changes. Their now solid roster will be rolling through Brooklyn to take over the Knitting Factory with their diverse sound and presence.

David E Beats and the White House Band is a loud, captivating, and energetic Brooklyn-based band. Formed in February 2010, the band created their own genre of music "New Vogue": a combination of Rap, Hard Rock and Blues. From a Hip Hop perspective, you can compare Beats melodies to a Kid Cudi, from a Rock perspective; Beats solos are reminiscent of a psychedelic 60's Jimmy Hendrix, while his melodies are reminiscent of a more modern Buddy Guy.

WARNER DRIVE is an original rock based outfit that features catchy riffs, a rock/punk edge, and an energetic performance. The group is carving out a name for themselves through extensive touring, and have built a loyal and growing base of fans. They bring a new sound and meaning to the term Rock N Roll by adding a twist to rock with a punk edge.

ACIDIC is an amazing young L.A. band playing original alt/rock music, that you really must see live. Battle-of-the-Bands judges have characterized lead singer/guitarist Michael Gossard as a front man "larger than life." Made up of members all younger than the legal drinking age, Acidic stuns audiences nation wide with their take on straight up youthful rock n' roll, the way it should be.

Wu Lyf is nothing; 4 dumb kids, looking for a place to call home, two brothers greet two brothers and play heavy pop.
Bass Drum of Death is a band from Mississippi. John plays guitar and sings and Colin plays the drums. Together they make blown-out, blazing songs. They are set to release their debut LP GB City on Fat Possum Records. John was Fat Possum's worst employee 3 years ago. He wrote and recorded the whole record himself using just a drumset, a guitar, a usb microphone, a computer, and a shitload of talent.
Australian import Young Magic, made up of Isaac, a portable studio and numerous friends, currently resides in New York City. For the last six months, Young Magic has been recording songs in various places to add to the song's unique and organic psychedelic sound.

Australian Blue Mountains rock & rollers Cloud Control may have begun on a whim, but winning a battle of the bands show has never proven so fortunate. Having already accumulated numerous prizes and accolades in Australia and supporting such acts as Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, The Temper Trap, and Local Natives, Cloud Control is currently touring in support of their major debut Bliss Release.

Beige's work with color has led them to show their work in a clear and positive manner-in the lines and tones of beige. Yvette is a NY-based vocalist, songwriter, keyboardist, and bandleader whose work is influenced by the effects of everyday industrial environments on personal psychology, women's issues, and ambiguous identity.

Mother Mother

Since the band's conception as an acoustic folk trio in 2005, they've become a force to be reckoned with, reputed as an act who challenges the conventions of popular music, cultivating a sound all their own. With substantial headway made in the US and Europe, Mother Mother continue to build on that momentum with EUREKA, their third LP that offers up eccentric, hook laden pop-meets-rock songs housed in creative arrangements with clever lyrics and intricate harmonies. Having already graced the stage with Weezer, Pearl Jam, Tokyo Police Club, The Decemberists and Spoon, this Canadian five-piece are a force to be reckoned with. Q magazine probably says it best: Mother Mother are "musically fearless, melodically inspired Canadians at their envelope-pushing best."

Hyra Da Hero
Knitting Factory Brooklyn?361 Metropolitan Ave (at Havemeyer St)?Subway: L to Lorimer
July 27, Doors: 7:30 PM / Show: 8:30 PM

Hyro Da Hero spins his own cycle of hip hop on his debut album Birth, School, Work, Death. Hyro loads rock ‘n' roll attitude into explosive, engaging and enthralling rap music. With the crunch of a power chord and the snap of a rhyme, the Houston-bred Los Angeles-based MC spits pure fire. Produced by Ross Robinson-the man behind Korn, Slipknot and At the Drive-in's legendary debuts-Birth, School, Work, Death sounds like Nas fronting Rage Against the Machine.
