Inaside Chicago Dance Announces 'Inaside Chicago Dance Project,' 4/28

The dynamic Inaside Chicago Dance will debut three new works when it presents the "Inaside Chicago Dance Project," its popular annual spring concert of works by established, emerging and new choreographers at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Avenue, Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m.

"The enrichment of the art of jazz dance is my passion and part of the core mission of Inaside Chicago Dance," says Inaside's Artistic Director Richard A. Smith. "So, to be able to feature three new jazz dance works alongside acclaimed works from our repertoire is exciting and fulfilling for me and every member of the Inaside team."

The new works featured in the Saturday, April 28 program will include the following:

Sinead Gildea's "capsule," a full company work choreographed to Ahn Trio and Oliver Tank, uses evocative choreography to play with literal images of time as well as emotional and physical reactions to time. The choreography explores the subjective nature of time; seeming to suspend, rush past, or loom above as seconds tick away. "capsule" depicts the dancers as metaphor and imagery for time as well as individuals struggling to capture definitive moments and encapsulate their meaning with the power of memory.

A new work by ICD's Courtney Kozlowski choreographed to "The End of the World" by Audiomachine. This full company work, inspired by personal experiences in Kozlowski's life, uses contemporary jazz movement, balancing clean lines and a beautiful quality of movement to illustrate how the support and love of family, friends and casual acquaintances helps us through difficult times, enabling us to change and emerge stronger and better than before. Kozlowski's work was selected to be included in the program by popular audience vote at ICD's March 10 Choreographer Sponsorship Event.

Artistic Director, Richard A. Smith's newest work, "The Sides of Every Story" is a trio set to Olafur Arnalds "Til enda." The piece questions truth and is inspired by Lady Justice. The femininely assertive movement creates a balance of right and wrong with only one truth in the middle.

The program will also include works by established choreographers:

Harrison McEldowney and Tony Savino's joint work "Mink, Jazz and Swing: Dancing to the music of Miss Peggy Lee" (2011). The Chicago Tribune hails this for its "colorful, breezy blend of concert dance and ballroom stylistics delivered with easy authority and playfulness."

A continuation of Inaside Chicago Dance Artistic Director Richard A. Smith's athletic "More Than a Conqueror" (Part I, Sept. 2011), set to music by Les Tambours du Bronz, featuring with the athletic beauty that is part of Smith's signature style.

Richard Smith's critically acclaimed "When No Means Maybe" (April 2010), choreographed to music by Shemekia Copland and Anthony Hamilton. The Chicago Tribune lauds the work for the way it "married subtle theatrics with original movement to tell a pained, defiant and tender story of the push and pull of love.

Eddy Ocampo's "The Alarm Will Sound" (2008).This work with musical construction by Eddy Ocampo blends sharp quirky isolations with elongated limbs to accomplish brilliant musicality. The dancers frequently turn their heads to warn the audience, then stride in unison around the stage nervously anticipating the alarm.
