Hawaii Symphony Orchestra Presents Their First Ohana Concert PETER AND THE WOLF

Join the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) for a special "family" concert on Saturday, November 12 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The HSO revives a long tradition of presenting concerts for children and families with this event. The "Ohana Concert" will be the first for the HSO which is celebrating its fifth season in 2016-17. The title piece, Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" has long introduced young children to the orchestra and been a hallmark of youth concerts for decades.
Prokofiev's "Peter and The Wolf" was written in 1936 and commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow with the intent to cultivate musical tastes in children from their very first years in school. The piece has been performed worldwide, a Disney animated feature was even created for the piece. The various animals and characters in the story are personified by sections of the orchestra and provide a base for young listeners to make connections with the music. The "story" also features narration. Michael Titterton, former President and General Manager of Hawai'i Public Radio and HSO Board Member will narrate. The Tchaikovsky and John Williams pieces add additional joy to the concert! Maestro Ward Stare, also conducting Halekulani Masterworks Concert, "Kennard Plays Liszt" on Sunday, November 13, will lend his hand to the Ohana Concert which also includes Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Mirlitons" from The Nutcracker and music from Harry Potter by John Williams. The concert will run approximately one hour and will be preceded by an opportunity for young members of the audience to get acquainted much more personally with the instruments and musicians who make up the Orchestra. A special, "instrument petting-zoo" will be set-up in the Blaisdell Concert Hall lobby beginning at 9:30 a.m.About Ward Stare
One of the hottest young conductors in America, Ward Stare was recently appointed Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, MO. In 2009 he made his highly successful Carnegie Hall debut, stepping in at the last minute for Music Director David Robertson who performed the role of chansonnier in H. K. Gruber's Frankenstein!!. The 2013-14 season saw his return to the Atlanta and Detroit Symphony Orchestras, as well as his debuts with the Syracuse Symphoria, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic with Lang Lang as soloist. Other recent engagements include the Houston, Québec, and Dallas Symphonies, as well as numerous engagements with the Saint Louis Symphony where he served as a regular guest conductor on the orchestra's 2012-13 Family, Special Event and Subscription series.
About Michael Titterton
Recently retired as President and General Manager of Hawaii Public Radio since January 1999. Immediately prior to his HPR appointment, he had been building and developing community- based public radio stations on the East Coast, as well as working as a consultant to stations in distress. During his thirty years in public radio he has worked in capacities as varied as network reporter, producer, news director, and operations manager, before his descent into management. This is not his first time narrating "Peter and The Wolf".
Tickets: Tickets are General Admission, $20 for adults and $10 for children and are available at the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra Box Office or through the Blaisdell Box Office. There are no additional discounts for this concert. Children's tickets must be purchased in-person at either ticket office with valid ID or the child present.

The new HSO carries on the legacy of the Honolulu Symphony, which was founded in 1900 and performed for more than a century.
