Groundwork Music Project Presnts 2nd Annual We Write It We Play It Concert Tonight
Groundwork Music Project has announced the 2nd Annual We Write It We Play It Concert. This event will feature songs written and performed by elementary students at Blackshear and Maplewood Elementary Schools, and co-performed with the Groundwork Music Orchestra.
The concert will also feature students from the SWAN program at Blackshear Elementary. The SWAN program brings UT music students into the elementary classroom to provide vocal and instrument lessons.
Students who are part of Kevin Carroll's EdUKEcation program will also participate. Mr. Carroll's program capitalizes on the ease and approachability of the ukulele in order to help people of all ages develop both musical literacy, and a strong sense of community.
Neal Kassanoff, the founder of Groundwork Music Project, along with Kevin Carroll, and other professional musicians, have been working with elementary students and professional musicians throughout the current school year to help students learn the fundamentals of songwriting, create their own songs, as well as sing and play music from the Groundwork Music Orchestra catalog.
Along with the songs written by the children, Groundwork Music Orchestra will perform its own original material, including songs co-written by Kassanoff and Ben Kweller, and other favorites from the Groundwork Music canon.
Groundwork Music Project enhances the lives of children by providing free and low cost music classes to schools with limited means. These programs provide the musical activities that are essential to healthy development across a broad spectrum: emotional, cognitive, social and more. The mission of the Groundwork Music Project is simple: to provide high quality music education programs to young children who could not otherwise afford it.
This free event is sponsored in large part by City of Austin's Cultural Arts Funding. Groundwork Music Project welcomes donations as the organization heads into its spring pledge drive.
