Bramwell Tovey continues the first week of the Los Angeles Philharmonic classical season at the Hollywood Bowl by bringing 20th-century favorites from Bernstein and Gershwin to the stage, Thursday, July 10, at 8 pm. Singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, fresh from performing at the Bowl the night before in the jazz concert, To Ella with Love, joins the program to sing favorite Gershwin tunes. She replaces Megan Hilty, who was forced to cancel due to scheduling conflicts.

The program begins with Bernstein's Overture to Candide, followed by the composer's Three Dance Episodes from On the Town. Next, Tovey acts as both conductor and pianist for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. After intermission, Bridgewater takes the stage for selected Gershwin songs -- The Man I Love, They Can't Take That Away from Me, A Foggy Day and Fascinating Rhythm. The program concludes with Tovey leading the LA Phil in Gershwin's An American in Paris.

Grammy and Juno award-winning conductor/composer Bramwell Tovey was appointed Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2000. Under his leadership the VSO has toured China, Korea, Canada and the United States. Tovey is also the Artistic Adviser of the VSO School of Music, a state-of-the-art facility and recital hall which opened in downtown Vancouver in 2011. His tenure has included complete symphony cycles of Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms and the establishment of an annual festival dedicated to contemporary music. In 2018, the VSO's centenary year, Tovey will become the orchestra's Music Director Emeritus. During the current season his guest appearances include the BBC and Royal Philharmonics, the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Boston Symphony, the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras and the Toronto Symphony. In the summer of 2014 he makes his debut with the Chicago Symphony at the Ravinia Festival and in 2015 will lead Korngold's Die tote Stadt for Calgary Opera.

Few entertainers have ever commanded such depth of artistry in every medium as Dee Dee Bridgewater. Fewer still have been rewarded with Broadway's coveted Tony Award (Best Featured Actress in a Musical - The Wiz), nominated for the London theater's West End equivalent, the Laurence Oliver Award (Best Actress in a Musical - Lady Day), won three Grammy Awards (2011's Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan: To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater, 1998's Best Jazz Vocal Performance and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal for "Cottontail" - Slide Hampton, arranger - "Dear Ella "), and France's 1998 top honor Victoire de la Musique (Best Jazz Vocal Album). Bridgewater captured the hearts of audiences worldwide in The Wiz with her signature song, "If You Believe," and continues to inspire awe whenever she performs.
