CSO's Chesapeake Energy Casual Series Begins With a String Bass and Piano Duo, 1/9

CANTON, Ohio (January 2, 2014) - While the weather is frigid, the Canton Symphony Orchestra is doing everything it can to provide a warm, cozy and inviting place to hang out. The CSO's Chesapeake Energy Casual Series kicks off January 9-10 with a string bass and piano duo. Bassist Cory Palmer and pianist Katherine Monsour Barley will perform well-known string bass showcase pieces such as Serge Koussevitzky'sHumoresque and Henry Eccles Sonata in g minor.

The casual series is an intimate setting of afternoon and early evening performances: Thursdays at 1pm and Fridays at 7pm on performance weekends. Typically only a one hour concert, the intimate setting puts the audience up-close and personal with the musicians who provide background to many of the pieces they perform. Some of the casual concerts include a question and answer time so the audience can become more familiar with the music or instruments showcased.

The series at Cable Recital Hall (in the Cultural Center for the Arts on Market Avenue North) showcases musicians from the Canton Symphony Orchestra performing many well-known yet sometimes lesser-known classical pieces showcasing a particular instrument or small ensemble. A reception with audience members and musicians is included with each concert.

The Casual Series performance dates this spring are January 9-10, February 6-7, March 13-14, and May 1-2 (Thursdays at 1pm and Fridays at 7pm). The future performances feature a contemporary quintet - 3 cellos, a clarinet and piano in February, an oboe/piano duo in March, and the Chamber Orchestra/Chorus in May. The Friday evening performances are sponsored by Chesapeake Energy.

The Casual Series concerts are an affordable $15 for adults or $10 for seniors/students. There is also a Flex Pass available for $50 that includes four tickets to any program. These can be used in any combination for entry to the eight concerts/four programs. The Flex Pass or individual tickets are available online at www.CantonSymphony.org, by calling 330-452-2094, at the box office window located inside the Cultural Center for the Arts (weekdays 10am-2pm), or by walk-up. Dress is casual and concerts are appropriate for ages 8 and older.

Founded in 1937, the Canton Symphony Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble and organization dedicated to performing concerts that enrich, educate and entertain. Under the direction of Gerhardt Zimmermann, the orchestra performs classical, pops, holiday, and educational programs. Most performances are in Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, 2323 17th Street NW, Canton, Ohio (at McKinley High School across from C.T. Branin Natatorium). Parking at McKinley High School is free.
