Boston Landmarks Orchestra To Offer Free Concerts, 7/16-8/27

Overlooking their summer home on the Esplanade, Boston Landmarks Orchestra staff, board, sponsors, and partners gathered yesterday morning (albeit snowy) at the Goethe-Institut where Music Director Christopher Wilkins revealed the 2014 collaborative and inclusive civic celebrations of music and programs in Boston's neighborhood. This summer's free concerts at the DCR's Hatch Shell selections are inspired by a wonderful range of the world's musical traditions. Concerts will be held every Wednesday evening (7pm) beginning July 16 thru August 27, 2014. For more information and schedule visit www.landmarksorchestra.org. July 16 Opening Night: Carmina burana, presented by Boston Landmarks Orchestra, with conductor Christopher Wilkins and in collaboration with the Back Bay Chorale, music director Scott Allen Jarrett, and the One City Choir -made up of singers from all parts of the city- will be performing music every generation knows. Featured performers include Teresa Wakim, soprano; TBA, tenor; and Aaron Engebreth, baritone. The program features the premiere of At the River by Larry Bell, On the Waterfront by Leonard Bernstein, and Carmina burana by Carl Orff.

July 23 Fiesta sinfo?nica: Boston Landmarks Orchestra and conductor Christopher Wilkins present an evening of Latin music and dance in partnership with IBA-Inquilinos Boricuas en Accio?n, the Conservatory Lab Charter School's Dudamel Orchestra, music director Adrian Anantawan, Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and a "pocket-sized salsa orchestra" made up of musicians from Boston's Latino community. The program features Cuban Overture by George Gershwin, La noche de los Mayas by Revueltas, En memoria de Chano Pozo by Amram, and Viaje by Gonzalo Grau.

July 30: Longwood Symphony, conductor Ronald Feldman, and the acclaimed orchestra of Boston's medical community performs a program of classic works offered in the spirit of service, celebrating the international nature of this exceptional institution. Program TBA.

August 6: Boston Lyric Opera, conductor David Angus, and Boston Landmarks Orchestra proudly continues a series of highly successful collaborations with Boston Lyric Opera in a program that features excerpts and scenes from operas by Verdi, Mozart, and others, and a sneak peek at the company's upcoming season. Program TBA.

August 13: From the New World: The Legacy of the Spirituals: Boston Landmarks Orchestra and conductor Christopher Wilkins, in partnership with the Museum of African American History, the New England Spiritual Ensemble, and the One City Youth Choir-made up of young singers from throughout the Boston area - present a program featuring The Chariot Jubilee by R. Nathaniel Dett, the premiere of Griot Legacies, by Trevor Weston, and Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World") by Dvo?ák.

August 20: Rhapsody in Green: Boston Landmarks Orchestra and conductor Christopher Wilkins present the annual "green" concert. It will offer music of brilliant colors and cooling shades on a late summer evening, in association with environmental organizations from across the state.

August 27: O'er the Land of the Free: Bicentennial of The Star-Spangled Banner: Boston Landmarks Orchestra and conductor Christopher Wilkins will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of our national anthem, in collaboration with the 1812 Marine Guard for the USS CONSTITUTION and the USS CONSTITUTION Museum.

Boston Landmarks Orchestra will also be featuring several community events:

Thursday, May 15 at 7:30 pm: Harvard Club of Boston and Howard Gardner present The App Generation, which will feature a reception and discussion with Landmarks overseer Howard Gardner, presented with the New Center for Arts and Culture and the Harvard Club of Boston.

Wednesday, June 18 at 6 pm: Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge will hold "A Musical Feast," the annual Landmarks Gala, honoring long-time friend and current overseer Smoki Bacon as she turns 86 1/2.

Friday, June 20 at 12 pm: Brighton Landing presents Prelude to National Music Day, in which Landmark's Woodwinds perform in front of 10 Guest Street in Brighton.

Wednesday, July 9 at 6 pm: Charlestown will feature the Family Concert & Instrument Playground featuring Landmarks Brass and Conservatory Lab Charter School Brass.

Sunday, July 13 at 6 pm: Pinebank Promontory and Jamaica Plain will feature the Family Concert & Instrument Playground featuring Landmarks Brass and Conservatory Lab Charter School Brass.

Sunday, July 2: Copley Square will feature The Boston Globe-WGBH Summer Arts Weekend.
