Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra to Present Mahler's Magnificent SYMPHONY NO. 1

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra is delighted to team up with the University of Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra in this special presentation of Gustav Mahler's magnificent Symphony No. 1 in D major.

Also on the program is Carl Maria von Weber's Concerto for Bassoon featuring Davis Hampton, bass clarinet. A University of Puget Sound music education major, Hampton performs with the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra and serves as a conducting assistant for the Concert BanD. Davis is one of the recipients of the 2016-17 Paul Bellamy Music Scholarship and winner of the Concerto/Aria Competition.

Mahler had an exceptionally interesting yet tumultuous life. His music evokes an expansive emotional gamut, ranging from the most despairing to the frivolous. Conducting for the world's greatest orchestras and opera houses, Mahler left behind some of the most significant work in the symphonic repertory. He continuously pushed at the boundaries of form, scope, orchestration, and performance. In his First Symphony we get a glimpse of this extraordinary human and the music born from his fertile imagination.

Both of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's winter concerts will be performed off-site. The ticketed Saturday performance on March 4 will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Bainbridge High School and the free concert on Sunday, March 5 will be at 4:00 p.m. at Schneebeck Concert Hall, University of Puget Sound. Saturday tickets, $21 for adults, and $18 for seniors, students, military, and teachers, may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island. Patrons attending the Saturday concert are urged to phone the BPA Box Office to take advantage of the BSO's "Youth in Music Initiative," which provides free tickets for youths, ages 18 and under. The Sunday concert in Tacoma is free for all ages! BPA Box Office hours are 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance.
