In celebration of its Centenary in 2016, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has announced a commissioning project inviting ideas submitted by members of the public as inspiration for 10 unique encores. Ten internationally renowned composers will each compose an encore to be presented during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons.

BSO patrons and the general public are encouraged to generate "out of the box," fun and creative ideas to serve as the composers' inspirations for the encores. Encores are short "surprise" pieces the orchestra typically performs at the end of a program. These ideas (in 100 words or less) could be suggestions about musical style, or could feature a particular instrument, local icon, location or historical figure - any idea is welcome. Each of the 10 composers would then choose the idea that most inspires them to compose a two to three-minute encore based on this theme. Those participants with winning submissions will be invited to attend the performances featuring their encores, and will receive a printed and signed score of the respective encore.

Full details of the Encore commissions, including the identity of the composers, will be announced at the launch of the 2015-2016 season in spring 2015.

The deadline for submission is June 30, 2014 at 5 pm. The online form to submit encore themes and ideas is available at BSOmusic.org/encores.
