Ann Hampton Callaway with the PSO Presents THE STREISAND SONGBOOK, Now thru 11/17

The second concert of the PNC Pops season celebrates one of America's most powerful and enduring musical artists with one of America's great multi-talented stars of stage and screen when Ann Hampton Callaway presents The Streisand Songbook tonight, Nov. 14-17 at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Callaway, a Platinum award-winning singer-songwriter, crafts a loving musical portrait of Barbra Streisand's multi-faceted, five-decade career. With a unique pop/jazz perspective, Callaway will perform many unforgettable songs, spanning Streisand's Broadway years to her film and pop albums. Along with these timeless music classics, Callaway will weave humorous and inspiring anecdotes throughout the evening of the woman who serves as her role model, mentor and friend.

Anne Hampton Callaway is one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. She is best known for Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical "Swing!" and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series "The Nanny." Callaway is a Platinum award-winning writer whose songs are featured on six of Barbra Streisand's recent CDs. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she also has written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland and Barbara Carroll to name a few. Callaway's live performances showcase her warmth, spontaneous wit and passionate delivery of standards, jazz classics and originals. She is one of America's most gifted improvisers, taking words and phrases from her audiences and creating songs on the spot, whether alone at a piano or with a symphony orchestra. Ann has been a special guest performer with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood and is featured at many of the Carnegie Hall tributes. She has sung with more than 25 of the world's top orchestras and big bands, and has performed for President Clinton in Washington, D.C. and at President Gorbachev's Youth Peace Summit in Moscow. Callaway performed with her sister, Broadway star Liz Callaway, in their award-winning show "Sibling Revelry" at London's Donmar Warehouse. Their newest act "Boom!," a critically acclaimed celebration of the baby-boomer hits of the 60s and 70s, was recorded on PS Classics and debuted in the top 25 on Billboard Jazz. Callaway devotes much of her time to philanthropic causes, both as a singer performing in numerous benefits, and as a songwriter composing songs in times of need

Fawzi Haimor is in his second season in the position of assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his Pittsburgh appointment, he was the assistant conductor of the Alabama Symphony for two seasons. In Pittsburgh, he conducts a variety of concerts including subscription, pops, education and outreach.Haimor also has worked with the Jacksonville Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Amman Symphony in the Middle East and, in Europe, Orquestra Sinfonico do Porto. He has also served as a cover conductor to esteemed conductors including Manfred Honeck, Leonard Slatkin, Gianandrea Noseda, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Yan Pascal Tortelier. In the current season, his guest engagements include the Erie Chamber Orchestra and a return to Alabama and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestras, as a guest artist. Passionate about the education of young musicians, Haimor was the first music director of the newly formed Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra where he was involved in the development of a brand new premier level youth orchestra for the state of Alabama. He was also the founder and first music director of the Davis Summer Symphony, an organization geared towards the education and outreach of classical music to residents of the Davis, California community. He has subsequently been invited to guest conduct youth ensembles across the United States. He is also a committed advocate of contemporary music and has performed works by composers such as Kevin Puts, Bela Fleck, Mohammed Fairouz and Avner Dorman. Born in Chicago in 1983, Haimor was raised in the Middle East and the San Francisco Bay Area. He began playing the violin at the age of 4 and completed his training at the Jacobs School of Music in Indiana University. He has earned bachelor's degrees in both music and neurobiology, physiology, and behavior, and a master's degree in conducting from the University of California-Davis before completing his second master's in instrumental conducting from Indiana University.
