What did our critic think of TAFFETY PUNK THEATRE COMPANY'S VENUS AND ADONIS at Taffety Punk Theatre Company?

A show dripping in pretension performed by a naked man? An impenetrable work obsessed with having a sex toy deep inside one’s backside? A meditation on “existential anxiety” that does little of note with an hour of precious life? There’s enough irony in You Are Going To Die to power an Alanis Morissette comeback, and then some.

Last week, SEXY LAUNDRY, a play about love and marriage opened at the Granville Island Stage in Vancouver. Presented by the Arts Club and written by local playwright Michele Riml, this contemporary Canadian comedy brought out all of the emotions in the audience ranging from laughter to tears.

Ten years after the opening of the hit Rita Lee Mora ao Lado, actress Mel Lisboa returns to play the rock star in an all new musical. With book and research by Guilherme Samora, direction by Marcio Macena and Debora Dubois, the show is based on the autobiography of the queen of Brazilian rock ‘n’ roll.

RIDE THE CYCLONE is more like an eccentric Tim Burton film than a John Hughes hug fest. However, the moments of genuine humanity and sentiment keeps the show from going off the rails.

This year's Jazz at Lincoln Center gala featured a host of star-studded performers including Kristin Chenoweth, Bernadette Peters, Josh Groban, and many more. A small sample of the hundreds of songs superstar Tony Bennett recorded and sang in concerts sparkled in this one-night-only concert on April 17th.

Under the direction of BJ Jones, John Patrick Shanley's newest play boasts a talented cast gifted with good humor and heartfelt emotion, but the uneven script feels as though it shrank in a dryer fed by clichés rather than coins.

What did our critic think of FRIENDS. THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL PARODY at The Kujawsko-Pomorski Music Theatre, Torun?

Under Larry Sousa’s wonderfully imaginative direction and with his choreography, a 16-person company of some of Boston’s brightest, most versatile performers is bringing the Canadian musical, with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Gregg Morrison and book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, to dazzling life with delightfully silly production numbers aplenty and a well-served soupçon of heart-tugging emotion.

The newest production at Marriott Lincolnshire is Meredith Willson’s classic and beloved The Music Man. Director/choreographer Katie Spelman has stayed true to the script and has made the fictional town of River City – based on Willson’s hometown of Mason City, Iowa – come to life.

Mary Poppins is pretty much a familiar name among parents and children everywhere. Disney's film is the Halmark of popular children's films. However, seeing this as a live theater production is a thrilling experience for young and old. Having seen this gem live onstage three times, I never tire of its popularity and life lessons.

Yes, a grand opera was inserted at Belk Theater as the clock or calendar was winding down! Around the world, Callas, Nilsson, and Sutherland are among the divas who have graced the powerhouse role of TURANDOT, and Franco Zeffirelli's production at the Met is as revered for its stateliness and splendor as the Notre Dame Cathedral. Grand? Monumental.

Adapted from the 1988 Tim Burton cult classic, BEETLEJUICE - THE MUSICAL is an over-the-top, chaotic, and wildly unhinged reimagining that amps up the kooky-ness of its source material a thousand-fold. Mostly funny and entertaining despite its tonal shifts and forced outlandishness, the show elicits lots of laughs thanks to its title character.

What I am about to share with you is an experience that I hope all theatre-goers in the Dayton area get to experience at some point in their lives. You hope that the next play or musical you attend will provide the entertainment or the emotional journey that all audiences crave.
