Wheeler Peavy Shares Family History in New Biography

Drawing on oral tradition and 80 years of census records and archives, author Wheeler Peavy set out to document the paternal side of his family tree, starting with Liza (Webb) Peavy, the matriarch of the Peavy clan, who worked on a "white" Peavy plantation in Conecuh, Ala. His new book traces the lineage of the many black families brought to Grimes County about 1861 by some of the great pioneers of Texas, including George Stoneham, who brought the Peavy family West from Conecuh, Ala.

"The Diasporta of the Peavy Family of Southern Grimes County, Texas (1837-2012)" began as an attempt to explore the history of about 60 African-American families brought to southern Grimes County by their slaveholders. The vastness of project's scope, however, soon led Peavy to concentrate on his paternal roots. This epic biography details the lives - and losses - of more than 1,000 descendants of Wash I and Liza Webb Peavy and features more than 850 photographs. A comprehensive index helps readers navigate through the many branches of the Peavy family tree.

Author Wheeler Peavy also wrote a book about his maternal roots in 1984 titled "The Smith Family: From Virginia to Teal Prairie, Burleson County, Texas (1850-1980), taking about eight years to finish the task. He worked on this latest project for more than 20 years, although not much work took place while he worked abroad in Saudi Arabia for 12 years. Peavy's wife, Joyce, died of lung cancer in 1992. Peavy already is working on his next project: the family history of Anica Peavy and her descendants.
