City of Lake Macquarie, Australia

Sam Wright was always drawn to the sea. The freedom and potential wealth the open water offered him was too great a draw, reeling him in from an early age. While he expected to find work and excitement in the seafaring world, he never expected the lifetime of lessons he would receive. Author Wayne Ward invites readers to experience Sam's lifetime of labor, lessons-learned and struggle in the new historical novel, "Old Union" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"Old Union" introduces readers to Sam as a 93-year-old man. Living in a nursing home, he reflects on his life as a seaman, beginning shortly after the Great Depression era. Readers watch as Sam embarks on his journey as a seaman at a young age, a journey that sees him find the love of his life, fight for the rights of a union and ultimately fight for the working class citizen.

Throughout "Old Union," Ward shows the struggles of the working-class from the 1930s to present-day. Ward accomplishes this by covering the seamen's strike of 1935, the influence of corporate policies and the numerous battles unions had with big business and industry.

An excerpt from "Old Union":

"The spirit of the boy though challenged many times never broke; Sam knew he could never best the spectre of a man who caused his mother to retreat into a shell, a brute who constantly beat her and him. A pitiless man hardened by years of heavy manual labour, his father offered no love or counsel for a fifteen year-old son who worked from sunrise to dusk, taken from school at twelve to plough dry fields."
