Timothy R. Nuske has a unique understanding of the mind, mental illness, and the mental health system. He has been labeled, medicated and involuntarily detained in a mental hospital, and has since become a student of psychology "The Map of the Psyche: The Truth of Mental Illness" (published by Balboa Press) presents his research of mental illness and how the mind works.

"Mental illness affects millions of people and costs billions of dollars," Nuske says. The 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing that was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that during the 12 months prior to the survey, an estimated 3.2 million Australians, 20 percent of the population aged between 16 and 85, had a mental disorder.

Nuske believes there is a better way to handle mental illness, which he claims is not actually an illness or disease at all. He postulates that understanding and treating mental disorders using a model of the psyche, like the one presented in his new book, "is more accurate, effective, cheaper and faster than the biological or medical models and treatments."

Psychologists and philosophers have been trying to understand the mind for hundreds of years. Nuske mapped it in under three, based on a lifetime of prior experience: "The map of the psyche was built to show that mine and others' madness is not caused by a defect or disease but as a natural response to a toxic environment and the many problems in living." Offering an alternative to psychiatric labeling and drugging, he shares what he considers to be a more accurate and effective approach to mental health care in "The Map of the Psyche."
