Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the publication of David Adjmi's Stunning and Other Plays, the first collection by a striking new voice in the American theatre – and The Small Things and Other Plays, a collection of eight plays by Enda Walsh, one of Ireland's most innovative writers.
Stunning and Other Plays collects three plays by the award-winning playwright, including Elective Affinities, which is currently receiving its U.S. premiere in a sold-out run presented by Soho Rep, piece by piece productions and Rising Phoenix Repertory at Soho Rep in New York City. His work has also been produced or developed by such prestigious theatres as Lincoln Center, Manhattan Theatre Club, The Royal Court in London and Yale Repertory, among others.
With heightened language and a sharp sense of humor, David Adjmi explores varying modes of identity and assimilation in this distinctive collection that includes: Stunning, the "razor-sharp satirical tragedy" (NY1) set in the insular Syrian-Jewish community the playwright grew up in, which follows a teenage bride whose world is disrupted by her intellectual African-American housekeeper; the "slashingly funny" (New York Times) The Evildoers, about the collapse of two privileged couples; and the post-9/11 monologue Elective Affinities, "a disturbing, slyly amusing piece" (New York Observer).
David Adjmi's other plays include Marie Antoinette, 3C, Strange Attractors and Caligula. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Whiting Writers' Award and a Steinberg Playwright Award, among others. His as-yet-untitled memoir is forthcoming from HarperCollins. Adjmi is a member of New Dramatists, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, the Iowa Playwrights Workshop and the Juilliard School.
The Small Things and Other Play is a collection of eight plays by Enda Walsh, one of Ireland's most innovative writers. This volume includes a foreword by the author, as well as misterman, which will receive its U.S. premiere later this month, directed by the playwright and starring Cillian Murphy, at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York.
This striking collection by "a truly original theatrical voice" (Guardian) includes the critically acclaimed Disco Pigs, misterman, bedbound and The Small Things, as well as Walsh's first play, The Ginger Ale Boy; Chatroom; Lynndie's Gotta Gun and How These Desperate Men Talk. Inspired by the great dramatic tradition in Ireland, Enda Walsh boldly bends that tradition in a highly imaginative, non-realistic style that delves into the darker sides of humanity, from a chilling tale of teenage alienation to a strange, haunting monologue about judgment day. Full of poetry in both movement and sound, Walsh's starkly harrowing work offers timely insights with mischievous and poignant humor.
Enda Walsh is the author of five Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award-winning plays, including Penelope, The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom. He also wrote the book for the new musical Once, based on the critically acclaimed 2006 film, which is currently receiving its world premiere at the New York Theatre Workshop; and he co-wrote the film Hunger, which won the Camera d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival.
